Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 9 - "300th Night"
In Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6, "Come, Let's Away," Nus Braka and the Venari Ral attacked Federation Starbase J19-Alpha and stole top-secret weapons. Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) confirmed that the Klingarite and his space pirates stole Omega-47 and technology to turn it into mines. The Venari Ral then walled in all of Federation space with impenetrable Omega-47 mines.
Meanwhile, Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter) led the USS Athena to Ukeck, a planet outside Federation space, to rescue Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) and his fellow Starfleet Academy cadets gone rogue. The USS Athena's spectacular escape from Ukeck didn't last long, as the Venari Ral's weapons stolen from J19-Alpha disabled Starfleet Academy's starship.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's Saucer Separation Loss Is Uniquely Tragic
Surrounded by the Venari Ral, Captain Ake ordered a saucer separation at the end of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9. The USS Athena's saucer disengaged and warped away from Nus Braka's forces, leaving behind the starship's nacelles and its Atrium.
Starfleet Academy's Sato Atrium is named for Star Trek: Enterprise's Hoshi Sato (Linda Park).
While the USS Athena was thankfully not destroyed, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9's saucer separation was tragic for its symbolic loss. The Sato Atrium, with its ponds, cherry blossom trees, and the Wall of Heroes, is the heart of Starfleet Academy's campus. Now, it's the property of Nus Braka and the Venari Ral.
Nus Braka wanted the USS Athena's warp drive when he attacked Captain Ake's ship in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy's series premiere. Now, Braka likely acquired the prize he sought, as the Athena's warp drive must be part of the stardrive section left behind.
Possibly even worse, the ring around the USS Athena's saucer section contains Starfleet Academy's dormitories. While most of Starfleet Academy's cadets are safely on Betazed, the Venari Ral, who are pirates, could easily break into the quarters of the students and the faculty and take whatever personal possessions they want.
Star Trek's Movie Saucer Separations Had The Same Result
Two saucer separations happened in the Star Trek movies, and they had the same result: the heartbreaking destruction of the Starship Enterprise. Saucer separations leading to the Enterprise's demise were an event that required the visual effects and big-screen splendor of a Star Trek movie.
Exclusive: Jonathan Frakes directs Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 9, and it's the last of his epic run of Star Trek episodes that he has helmed.
Star Trek Generations featured the most famous saucer separation that led to the Galaxy Class USS Enterprise-D's destruction. and the famous crash-landing of the D's saucer on Veridian III. The demise of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's (Patrick Stewart) first Starship Enterprise is the gold standard of the Enterprise becoming doomed by a saucer separation.
Star Trek Beyond proved that the Constitution Class USS Enterprise could also execute a saucer separation. The Starship Enterprise was already doomed after Krall's (Idris Elba) mechanical swarm tore it apart, but Captain James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) executed a saucer separation out of desperation.
Captain Ake swore, "He's not keeping my ship," when she led the saucer away. Yet, it's possible that the USS Athena's nacelles and atrium could be lost or destroyed. A best-case scenario is Captain Ake reclaiming the nacelles and making the USS Athena whole again in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy season 1's finale, but what condition will the starship be in after Nus Braka is done with it?
