Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek: Starfleet Academy Season 1, Episode 6 - "Come, Let's Away"Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6 raises the stakes and hands Captain Nahla Ake (Holly Hunter), her cadets, and Starfleet an epic and tragic defeat. Written by Kenneth Lin & Kiley Rossetter, and directed by Larry Teng, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6 is a harrowing nail-biter that features the return of Nus Braka (Paul Giamatti), who proves himself to be the United Federation of Planets' greatest threat.
Nus Braka is called in by Captain Ake and Admiral Charles Vance (Oded Fehr) as a Hail Mary to save the Starfleet Academy and War College cadets held hostage by the Furies on the derelict USS Miyazaki. Braka was known to have defeated the Furies, who are cannibalistic human/alien hybrids, with a sonic weapon, a secret he shared with the Federation for a price.
Meanwhile, Tarima Sadal (Zoë Steiner) and Caleb Mir (Sandro Rosta) maintain psychic contact thanks to her Betazoid abilities. Caleb, SAM (Kerrice Brooks), Jay-Den Kraag (Karim Diané), B'Avi (Alexander Eling), and Kyle Djokovic (Dale Whibley), are trapped in the USS Miyazai's bridge, trying to activate the ship's experimental Singularity Drive as the Furies attempt to break in.
While it's unsurprising that Nus Braka was duplicitous, the full extent of his plot and the devastation the Venari Ral inflicted on Starfleet Academy was shocking. What was meant to be a routine training mission for the War College and Starfleet Academy's cadets turned into a lesson in loss and tragedy for every soul aboard the USS Athena and the Federation at large.
Nus Braka's Plan To Beat Starfleet Academy Explained
Nus Braka's successful plan in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6 is multi-layered and steeped in his desire for revenge and to prove he is better than Captain Ake and the Federation. Braka gave Nahla and the Federation a black eye by playing them for fools by exploiting their trusting nature, even though Captain Ake and Admiral Vance never considered Nus anything less than a dangerous "lowlife."
Ultimately, Nus Braka's endgame was to attack a Federation space station, J19-Alpha, that contained top-secret weaponry and technology. The station was guarded by the Intrepid Class USS Sargasso, but Braka manipulated the Federation to call it away and come to the USS Athena's aid. The Sargasso was then disabled by the Furies' cloaked ship, which the USS Athena then shot out of the sky, thanks to Genesis Lythe (Bella Shepard) detecting it past its invisibility screen.
Darem Reymi (George Hawkins) also broke the secret coded message between Nus Braka and the Venari Ral, but he was too late to stop the destruction of the USS Sargasso.
The Furies' attack on the USS Miyazaki and the resulting hostage situation was a decoy by the Venari Ral, with the added benefit for Nus Braka of being invited aboard the USS Athena so that he could taunt Captain Ake face-to-face. Braka's true goal all along was to lay siege to J19-Alpha and steal the booty inside. The Venari Ral spared no lives, and the USS Discovery had to be called in after the fact to "collecting escape pods" of the thousands of dead.
Admiral Vance didn't disclose what, exactly, Nus Braka stole from J19-Alpha, but the Klingon/Tellarite hybrid's vile actions resulted in him being labeled "the most wanted man in the quadrant." There is now an intergalactic manhunt for Nus Braka. Whether Captain Ake will join this chase for Nus Braka and forego her responsibilities as Starfleet Academy's Chancellor remains to be seen.
Tarima Is In A Coma After Overloading Her Betazoid Powers
Tarima Sadal and Caleb Mir's romantic relationship went to the next level in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6. Despite the friction between them after Tarima accidentally saw Caleb's hidden trauma, their psychic connection was crucial to the Betazoid cadet saving Caleb and their friends, at the cost of her own safety.
Thanks to Tarima being able to get inside Caleb's head, she was able to deliver Chancellor Kelrec's (Raoul Bhaneja) plan to activate the USS Miyazaki's Singularity Drive from the bridge, which would disrupt the Furies' jamming field to allow the USS Athena to beam the cadets out. Tarima risked her own life by tearing out the neural inhibitor that capped her overwhelming psychic powers.
Tarima unleashed her full Betazoid powers, emitting both a psychic and sonic blast wave that killed all of the Furies.
When the Furies broke into the USS Miyazaki's bridge, Tarima and Caleb were in her psychic "safe place." To save Caleb and their friends, Tarima unleashed her full Betazoid powers, emitting a psychic sonic blast wave that killed all of the Furies. The sheer power Tarima let loose sent her into a coma.
Tarima's brother, Ocam Sadal (Romeo Carere), also revealed that Tarima losing control of her powers as a child is why her father, President Emerin Sadal (Anthony Natale), is deaf. What happens next to Tarima, whether she will come out of her coma, and how Caleb will react to this tragedy remains to be seen.
Starfleet Academy's War College Suffers A Tragic Death
Before Tarima Sadal could kill the Furies, the hybrid cannibals murdered B'Avi by shooting him point-blank in the chest with a phaser. B'Avi was the War College's Vulcan cadet, and he was one of Starfleet Academy's primary rivals, especially Darem Reymi's.
B'Avi may have disliked his Starfleet Academy counterparts, but the young Vulcan fought bravely alongside them against the Furies. B'Avi is also a fan of the comic book Tales from the Frontier about the crew of the USS Miyazaki, which gave the cadets a step forward towards the Miyazaki's computer recognizing them as the starship's new crew and reactivating the Singularity Drive.
B'Avi quoting Spock (Leonard Nimoy), referring to the "famous officer" who believed "the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one," was a clue that the Vulcan was doomed. Like Spock in Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, B'Avi's death is a tragic loss of a fine young Vulcan whose potential will never be fulfilled.
Between B'Avi's death and Tarima Sadal in a coma, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6 was utterly devastating to the War College and Chancellor Kelrec. One of the War College's finest first-year cadets was killed in action during a training exercise that turned into a hostage situation, and another cadet's life hangs in the balance, and her future is in doubt.
SAM Was Damaged And Is Glitching From The Furies' Phaser
Series Acclimation Mil aka SAM was shot by one of the Furies' phasers. Although the photonic cadet survived, SAM is now glitching, and it may be beyond The Doctor's (Robert Picardo) abilities to repair SAM. Now, there is a black cloud over SAM's future in Starfleet Academy.
SAM had just accepted her mission as the Emissary of her people, the Kasqians, in Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 5. Inspired by the legacy of Captain Benjamin Sisko (Avery Brooks), Jake Sisko (Cirroc Lofton), and Professor Illa Dax (Tawny Newsome), SAM emerged with more confidence and a greater sense of self.
The usually irrepressible SAM was surrounded by her friends at the end of Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6. The damage inflicted upon SAM by the Furies, and what it means for her photonic body and the Emissary's greater consciousness, is a shocking turn of events after Series Acclimation Mil's joyous win in the previous episode.
Nus Braka Promised Captain Ake "A Special Gift"
Although Nus Braka despises the Federation and everything it stands for, the Klingarite made it clear to Captain Ake that his deepest hatred is reserved for her. Braka savagely dissected Starfleet Academy's half-Lanthanite Chancellor, poking at her hidden regrets over the death of her son because of The Burn, and revealing that Nahla prioritized her duty over possibly saving his life.
Interestingly, Braka spoke about his father, who was a criminal who also hated the Federation and passed this enmity to Nus. However, Braka's grudge with Captain Ake is personal, stemming from Nahla sending him to a Federation prison 15 years earlier, which brought Caleb Mir and his mother, Anisha Mir (Tatiana Maslany), into their lives.
Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6 feels like a mid-season finale.
Nus Braka stole a secret weapon to exact revenge on the Federation, but he promised "a special gift" specifically for Captain Ake. The gripping, next-level Star Trek: Starfleet Academy episode 6 feels like a mid-season finale that kicks off the back half and endgame of season 1. It's also a riveting showcase of Academy Award-caliber acting by powerhouses Holly Hunter and Paul Giamatti.
