Warning: contains spoilers for Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming #5!
After 25 years, Star Trek has ended one of its most cursed romances. Over the course of 60 years, the franchise has featured some of science fiction’s most endearing relationships, such as Riker and Troi. Yet for every great pairing, there are some that are cursed, and one of the worst comes to an amicable end in Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming #5.
Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming #5 was written by Susan Bridges and Tilly Bridges and drawn by Adrian Bonilla. The issue brings to an end the short-lived relationship between Commander Chakotay and Seven of Nine. An encounter with an old flame made Chakotay realize he and Seven were simply not compatible.
The two are on good terms.
Star Trek: Voyager Had One of the Franchise's Best Romances
It Was Totally Logical For Voyager's Crew to Begin Pairing Off
Custom image by Ana NievesVoyager was stranded in the distant Delta Quadrant for seven years, away from the crew’s families and homeworlds. The crew had to soldier on, never knowing if they would see home again, all while fighting off the likes of the Borg and the Kazon. Voyager’s earliest episodes made it clear that crew members would begin pairing off and starting families.
Sure enough, couples sprung up on Voyager. Perhaps the most notable were Lieutenant B’Elanna Torres and Tom Paris. Initially, the two might have seemed star-crossed: Torres was a Maquis, angry over how her life had turned out. Paris was a disgraced Starfleet officer pressed into serving on Voyager as a way to commute his prison sentence.
Both Torres and Paris grew and matured as individuals and officers, and their loving relationship was proof of this.
Over time, Paris and Torres fell in love. Both Torres and Paris grew and matured as individuals and officers, and their loving relationship was proof of this. Tom and B’Elanna balanced each other out. Eventually, as Voyager was returning to the Alpha Quadrant, B’Elanna gave birth to their first child: Miral.
Seven of Nine and Chakotay Got Together In Star Trek: Voyager's Final Season
Seven and Chakotay's Relationship Was Not Popular With Fans
Star Trek: Voyager’s writers must have surmised that what was good for Tom and B’Elanna would work for others as well. Therefore, during the show’s seventh season, Chakotay began a relationship with Seven of Nine. The relationship lasted for the remaining few episodes of Voyager’s run, but no mention was made when Seven returned in season one of Picard.
Robert Beltran would return as Chakotay in Star Trek: Prodigy.
The primary reason Seven and Chakotay’s relationship ended and was never spoken of again was because it was enormously unpopular with Star Trek fans. Whereas they rooted for Tom and B’Elanna to find each other, they greeted Chakotay and Seven’s coupling with derision. Fans believed the two were legitimately mismatched, and the relationship was “tacked on” for drama purposes.
Chakotay and Seven of Nine Ended Their Relationship Like Adults, and It Was a Nice Change of Pace
Chakotay and Seven of Nine May Be Star Trek's Worst Couple
Star Trek: Voyager: Homecoming #5 brings this ill-advised relationship to a close, and in a mature and dignified way. Rather than a turbulent breakup, Chakotay and Seven of Nine discuss their relationship, and why it is not working, as adults. They agree that they are better off as friends and not lovers, ending one of Star Trek’s worst relationships.
