Star Trek is struggling a bit with adaptations right now overall, particularly in the areas where it has traditionally excelled. Discovery and Lower Decks drew to a close back in 2024, leaving us with Strange New Worlds and Starfleet Academy, both of which are set to conclude their solid runs in 2027.
That leaves the world of video games as a potential port in a storm, and there are some options out there that are worth considering. Star Trek: Resurgence is still a great pick if you enjoy games that prioritize player choice, but arguably the best release of the bunch is a fan-made creation that modifies one of the best strategy titles of all-time.
New Horizons Is One Of The Most Complete Mods In History
Over on the Steam Workshop, you should be able to find the page for Star Trek: New Horizons, a total overhaul mod for Stellaris that turns the game into your own personal entry in the franchise.
In case you aren't familiar with the base game, it's essentially a 4X space grand strategy where you take control of a civilization that has just discovered faster-than-light travel. That obviously opens up a whole universe of potential, and you'll quickly find yourself handling galactic politics and fighting wars with the best of them.
This mod keeps that essence but overhauls all of the assets and civilizations to create a living, breathing Star Trek universe. It does a lot more than that, though, and it introduces a bunch of custom systems that make the game more at home in Gene Roddenberry's creation.
Some of the features that make up part of the extensive creation include:
- Canonical static/random maps incl. low-end PC and BOTF style.
- About 100 canon races with animated portraits.
- New district system overhauling economy and planet specialisation.
- Full ship sets for 70+ races (UE, UFP, Terran, Klingon, Romulan, Cardassian, Dominion, Gorn, Borg, pirates etc.).
- Iconic ships like: Sovereign Enterprise, Dominion Super BB, Voth City, Charon mothership.
- Unique flagships with tech, exploration and combat roles.
- Playable Borg with unique story, tech, ships, components, events and assimilation.
- 800+ unique ship models.
- 1000+ events, 1M+ words.
- Many megastructures: Suliban Helix, Argus Array, Borg Unicomplex.
- New traditions, edicts, decisions, policies.
- Innovative ship designer with thousands of components.
- New tech tree with ~2000 technologies.
In even better news, the game has been updated more diligently than almost any mod out there, and it's still going strong, more than ten years on from its original release. It's also totally free to download and get in on the fun, so there's really no risk to trying it out for yourself.
Star Trek Doesn't Have Too Much On The Way
Unfortunately, things don't look like they will be improving on the television front any time soon, with very little currently in production tied to the franchise. In better news, there is a 15th feature-length Star Trek movie in development at Paramount, though don't expect to hear much about that in the near future.
