There's no doubt that Star Trek: Lower Decks is the most out there adaptation that we have ever seen attached to the beloved sci-fi IP, and overall, it felt like a genuine breath of fresh air for both old and new fans. The adult animated comedy series debuted back in 2020 and did the noble thing of releasing five seasons in relatively short order, before drawing to a close in 2024.
While it's sad that it's gone, it has undoubtedly left behind a solid legacy that's worth returning to whenever the occasion calls for it, and it would be a shame if it were left entirely in the past for good. Happily, it seems that isn't going to be the case, as the series has been adapted to a new medium, and it could be a really fun way to bring back the glory days.
Over on the Looney Labs website, you should be able to find the product listing for Star Trek Lower Decks Fluxx, a standalone card game that combines the rules of the classic Fluxx game with the comedy and chaos of the animated series. It seems like a heady combination on the face of it, and though we don't know exactly what it contains just yet, the early signs look good.
The manufacturer shared a brief description about what fans can expect from the game on their website, saying:
"The funniest frontier! These are the voyages of the Starship Cerritos, its five-season mission: to inspire the fifth Star Trek themed version of Fluxx! Join Boimler, Mariner, Rutherford, and Tendi, plus of course the bridge crew and even Cetacean Ops and Peanut Hamper, as they take on Creepers like the Pakleds, Badgey, and the most fearsome Moopsy. Is your helmet big enough to win you the game?"
Importantly, no other Fluxx sets are required to give the game a go, so it also serves as a great place to start if you're a fan of the series but don't have any experience with the game up to this point. If it's anything like the base game, you're in for a wild ride, with constantly shifting rules and increasingly outlandish cards really dialing-up the chaotic fun.
Image courtesy of MovieStillsDbOutside of that, the existing Star Trek adaptations are all winding down, with Strange New Worlds currently in its fourth season, with a fifth and final (shorter) run expected next year. Outside of that, no entirely new projects have been greenlit thus far, leaving the future of the franchise in something of a no man's land.
