James is a gaming writer from London who has spent thousands of hours exploring titles from every genre. Though he has a particular affinity for multiplayer titles like World of Warcraft, Destiny 2 and League of Legends, he has also put thousands of hours into single-player experiences, from deep RPGs to epic PC strategies. When he's not playing or writing, he can usually be found supporting his beloved Brentford FC.

The J.J. Abrams-led adaptations of the Star Trek franchise were deeply divisive at the time of their release, and much of that controversy hasn't really gone away. While it was undoubtedly a fun time for casual audiences heading to the cinema en masse, long-time fans of the franchise felt that they strayed too far from the roots laid out by Gene Roddenberry et al.

Equally, there were undoubtedly some ups and downs within it, as the third and final movie was certainly a much closer representation of the original show and more aligned with what big Star Trek fans were looking for. In any case, one major legacy that the films have left us with is that they created an entire timeline for themselves, and it turns out, other adaptations aren't entirely done with that period in the franchise's history.

Star Trek Online 2026-2027 roadmap

It is certainly true that plenty of Star Trek fans out there are gamers, and one of the first ports of call for them is undoubtedly Star Trek Online. The Beloved MMO is still going strong after all these years, and it continues to receive regular updates that improve the game all the time.

Now, developer Cryptic Studios has confirmed their plans for the game moving forward (as reported by Trek Movie), and that involves dipping back into the Kelvin Timeline.

In case you aren’t familiar, the Kelvin Timeline consists of the three most recent movies, and it was created to avoid erasing or contradicting the original "Prime" canon. There are a million differences that we don’t need to go into here, but essentially the lives of the main crew are changed significantly, while Vulcan’s fate and the more advanced technology alter things significantly.

In Star Trek Online, the Kelvin Timeline is rearing its head in the form of the Romulon Narada Starship (which is pulled through the black hole with Ambassador Spock’s ship). Regardless of whether you like the movie or not, it’s a very cool ship, and will be awesome to see in the game.

Outside of that, the Terran NX Starship from Star Trek: Enterprise and the Tarellian Plague Ship from The Next Generation are also set to debut, with the Dominion War Starfleet Starship bundle rounding out the offering by January 2027.

Star Trek Online Rediscovered Announcement Spocks

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds star Ethan Peck will also be adding his voice to Star Trek Online: Rediscovered, the upcoming season from the MMO, as Lieutenant Spock. He'll be joining Piotr Michael as Captain Spock, with several versions of the character set to appear throughout this latest narrative run for the game.

At the same time, Star Trek as a whole is in a period of change, as Paramount Skydance is shifting the universe away from its recent focus on streaming over at Paramount+ and steering toward a completely new cinematic reboot. The latter is set to be a completely standalone theatrical reset, likely moving beyond the Prime canon and Kelvin timeline into something entirely new for the foreseeable future.
