‘Star Trek’ Goes To the Scary Frontier in Next Major Video Game

Turns out, Paramount’s got more than a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game in the works. At Saturday’s IGN LiveSilent Hill 2 maker Bloober Team is working on a triple-A title for Star Trek.

Yes, really—it’s called Shadow Frontier, and it’s a single-player thriller/horror game starring Next Generation’s Lt. Ro Laren. Played by returning actor Michelle Forbes, players will control Ro as she tries to escape an uncharted planet. It’s filled with dead ships, and while investigating what drew her there, players will learn more about Ro. Longtime fans know she’s got some baggage, and Bloober’s Michałl Gembicki teased “a lot of dealing with the skeletons in her closet and exploring the consequences she made in the past.” And if you don’t know who Ro is, the aim is to also make you come away from the game loving her.

For those who loved the Silent Hill 2 remake, Paramount’s Shawn Kittelsen said that same team’s on Shadow Frontier. According to Gembicki, the studio’s affection for “horror and dark storytelling” seemed perfect for Star Trek. The franchise has dabbled with horror before, but not so much in games. That newness is why Kittelsen’s called this unlike any Trek game previously made. We’ll see how true that is when Star Trek: Shadow Frontier hits PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S in 2027.
