Star Trek Announces All-New Flagship, Everything We Know About Enterprise-G

Warning: SPOILERS for Star Trek #1 are ahead!The name Enterprise has been associated with Star Trek since the beginning. Multiple starships in Starfleet have carried that designation throughout the franchise’s history, most notably the original NCC-1701 from The Original Series and Strange New Worlds era, as well as the D and E variations from The Next Generation TV show and follow-up movies. There’s even a TV show named after the vessel, with Star Trek: Enterprise following the crew of the NX-01 100 years before The Original Series.

Now the Enterprise-G is getting the spotlight in IDW Publishing’s relaunched Star Trek flagship title. Star Trek #1 reunites fans with Seven of Nine captaining the ship following the events of Star Trek: Picard, and the spinoff series Star Trek: Zero Point will build off the events from this newly-released issue starting next month. Although the Enterprise-G is the latest in this line of ships boldly going where no one has gone before, it’s not an unfamiliar environment.

The Enterprise-G Was Originally The USS Titan-A

The majority of the action in Star Trek: Picard season 3 took place aboard the USS Titan-A, with Liam Shaw originally sitting in the captain’s chair. In the show’s penultimate episode, the USS Enterprise NCC-1701-F was shown under the command of Admiral Elizabeth Shelby, who was killed when the Borg started assimilating Starfleet’s youth. Shaw also died during The Collective’s takeover of Starfleet, and with his final breath, he made Seven the Titan’s acting captain.

After the Borg threat was neutralized, Seven was officially promoted to captain by Admiral Tuvok, her friend from the Star Trek: Voyager days. She also retained control of the Titan, which was now rechristened as the Enterprise-G following the Enterprise-F’s planned decommissioning. The ship’s name was changed to honor the command crew of the Enterprise-D, who revived the old ship to defeat the Borg. With Raffi Muskier serving as Seven’s first officer, and Jack Crusher advising her as a special counselor, the Enterprise-G embarked on its first official mission towards the end of the Picard series finale.

The Enterprise-G Is Venturing “Beyond The Known Galaxy”

Star Trek #1, written by Christopher Cantwell and illustrated by Dennis Menheere, picks up five years later and sees Seven of Nine and the rest of the Enterprise-G crew embarking on their own five-year mission, just like the original Enterprise did on multiple occasions. However, this mission asks a lot more of the comic’s starring characters, as they’ve been assigned to explore a newly-discovered area of space called the “Epsilon Corridor.” The twist is that for every year the Enterprise-G spends in this region, five years pass in the rest of the galaxy.

Other characters who agree to go on what will be a 25-year mission outside the Epsilon Corridor include Sidney La Forge, Geordi’s daughter; Alexander Rozheko, Worf’s son; and Lt. Commander Lily Sato, a descendent of Enterprise’s Hoshi Sato. Alas, this time dilation is just the start of what awaits the Enterprise-G as it investigates the three Class-M planets within this region. Star Trek #1 also sees the crew dealing with strange contradictions like time skips and inexplicable artifacts, as well as encountering a new group of villains called The Hidden.

It remains to be seen what upgrades have been made to the Enterprise-G since Star Trek: Picard, including if any were specifically added for the Epsilon Corridor mission. However, much like when Voyager was stranded in the Delta Quadrant, the crew has no allies to turn to if something happens to the ship. Maybe that will change in the coming issues, and perhaps new technology will also be discovered to further enhance its capabilities. For now, this is primed to be the Enterprise-G’s most dangerous and consequential mission yet.
