Stanley Recalls 2.6 Million of Its Famous Cups Due to Burn Hazard: See Which Ones

1 week ago 3

Stanley cups -- not the hockey trophy, the drinking vessels -- became a viral hydration sensation in recent years. But on Thursday, the company issued a recall of more than 2.6 million cups, according to the US Consumer Product Safety Commission. The two cup styles are Stanley's Switchback and Trigger Action travel mugs.

The cups can pose a hazard because the lid threads on these particular mugs can shrink when exposed to heat and torque, the CPSC said. This can then cause the lid to detach during use, and may result in you being burned if you're carrying a hot drink. Stanley is issuing free replacement lids to owners of the cups.

Stanley has received 91 reports worldwide, including 16 in the US, of cases where the mug lid detached during use, resulting in 38 burn injuries worldwide, including two burn injuries in the US. Eleven consumers worldwide required medical attention.

All Stanley Switchback and Trigger Action stainless steel travel mugs sold in the US are involved in the recall. They're double-walled mugs that were sold in a variety of colors, including white, black and green, in 12-, 16- and 20-ounce sizes, and feature polypropylene lids. The Stanley logo appears on the front and bottom of the mugs.

The mugs were sold nationwide, including at Amazon, Walmart, Dick's Sporting Goods and Target, from June 2016 through December 2024, for between $20 and $50, depending on the model.
