The highly anticipated Squid Game Season 2 doesn’t launch for weeks but is already amassing awards buzz.
The Korean smash hit, which remains Netflix‘s most-watched show of all time, has been nominated in the Best Television Series – Drama category alongside Peacock-Sky’s The Day of the Jackal, Netflix’s The Diplomat, Prime Video’s Mr and Mrs. Smith, FX’s Shōgun and Apple TV+’s Slow Horses.
Squid Game Season 2 doesn’t launch until Boxing Day (Season 3 will air in 2025) but qualifies for the globes. TV shows in hopes of nominations this year have to premiere by December 31, meaning Squid Game just about qualifies. Shows were required to have made their shows available in advance to all Golden Globe voters on the Golden Globes Screening Platform either before they premiere, at the time of the initial broadcast, or by November 4.
Jamie Foxx’s nominated Netflix special What Had Happened Was… is also yet to premiere, kicking off tomorrow.
The first season of Squid Game received three noms including a win for best supporting actor O Yeong-su, who was the first Korean-born actor to win the award.
The second season of Squid Game starts with Seong Gi-hun, otherwise known as Player 456, played by Lee, who is searching for the people behind the game three years after winning it. He uses the ₩45.6 billion prize to fund this search, helped by a large group of ne’er-do-wells and underworld figures, from the safety of a disused motel that he’s turned into his HQ fortress. Creator Hwang Dong-Hyuk and star Lee Jung-jae recently took us inside the series.
The best TV drama series nod was Squid Game’s sole nomination but presumably Season 3 could come into play for the next lot of Golden Globes.
The Golden Globes noms were unveiled this morning in LA. The ceremony takes place January 5, hosted by Nikki Glaser.
