Squid Game Season 2 Has Already Explained Away It's Biggest Plot Hole

1 week ago 4

At the end of Squid Game season 1, Gi-hun had finally recovered enough from the traumatic events of his games to head to America to be with his daughter and utilize his new extreme wealth. However, while heading for the airport, he noticed the Squid Game Salesman recruiting a desperate man for Old Oh-Il-nam's games. The idea of more people being brutally killed for the sake of money deeply disturbed Gi-hun, and rather than heading for his new life, he called the number on the memorable Squid Game business card and promised that he would do all it would take to put an end to the entire operation.

It Didn't Make Sense That Gi-Hun Would Be Allowed To Compete In The Games Again

Since Gi-hun openly announced on the phone that he planned to sabotage the contest, it's strange that he would be allowed to enter again. It's for precisely this reason that many had theorized that the Squid Game protagonist would go undercover as a guard in season 2 since this would give him a chance to secretly undermine the entire operation. However, teaser images showed Gi-hun among the other players, hinting that he would instead be welcomed with open arms as a repeat competitor.

Gi-hun had already revealed that he would not be playing the games out of the standard desperation for money. He already had more wealth than he knew what to do with. Instead, the Front Man would know that, as a player, Gi-hun was only entering in an effort to save lives. It's strange that those organizing the games would allow this to happen, but the Squid Game season 2 trailer subtly reveals why the Front Man might not have objected to Gi-hun's return.

Squid Games Season 2 Has Already Revealed That No One Will Listen To Gi-Hun

The Front Man Isn't Afraid Of Gi-Hun's Influence - For Good Reason

The Squid Game season 2 trailer shows Gi-hun doing all he can to prevent bloodshed in the games. He gives his fellow players instructions and even announces that he has played these games before and that winning is not worth the cost. However, this seems to have no bearing at all on the other players. Several contestants die in the trailer alone since no one cares to listen to anything Gi-hun has to say. His warnings don't change the fact that they are desperate for this money. There's really nothing Gi-hun could do or say in Squid Game season 2 to change this.

Squid Game season 1 is available to stream on Netflix.

This is likely a truth that the Front Man knew from the beginning, which is why, even after Gi-hun's threats, he was allowed to compete again. Though disturbing, the fact that no one will listen to Gi-hun's warnings further reinforces what Oh Il-nam established in Squid Game season 1—humans living in an oppressive and hopeless system will go to any lengths to change their circumstances.

Gi-Hun Entering Again Reveals The Most Sinister Truth About Squid Game

People Consistently Care More About Wealth Than Their Lives

In Squid Game season 1, Oh Il-nam, the old man who established the terrible games and chose to compete in them himself before his death, reminded Gi-hun that the contestants are given every opportunity to back out. They are not there against their will and are even provided a chance to bail after they understand the cost of competing. Gi-hun and his fellow contestants, for example, voted to return home, but each, without fail, chose to come back since their lives had become too impossible. The contestants choose their fate, and this, to Il-nam, excused those watching of their moral shortcomings.

He turned away from a chance to live happily with his daughter to save these desperate people, but they won't listen to him and will likely die regardless.

After years of seeing contestants choose to die for a chance to win money, the Front Man knew that allowing Gi-hun to try to sabotage the games from the inside would amount to nothing. It's a truth that poor Gi-hun himself may have to accept. He turned away from a chance to live happily with his daughter to save these desperate people, but they won't listen to him and will likely die regardless. Ultimately, if Gi-hun wants to be successful in his mission, he will have to find a different method. Or, perhaps Squid Game season 2 will be when Gi-hun finally meets his own tragic end.

In Squid Game, a mysterious invitation to join a competition is sent to people at risk who are in dire need of money. Four hundred fifty-six participants from all walks of life are locked into a secret location where they play games to win 45.6 billion won. Games are selected from traditional Korean children's games, such as Red Light and Green Light, but the consequence of losing is death. To survive, competitors must choose their alliances carefully - but the further they go in the competition, the more likely betrayal will rear its ugly head.
