‘Squid Game’ Could Get an English-Language Spinoff Series from David Fincher — Report

1 day ago 2

As we await the second season of Netflix’s dystopian, Korean smash hitSquid Game,” a report suggests the streamer may finally be looking to expand the story’s universe with a spinoff series from one of its biggest creators: David Fincher.

Fincher is reportedly eyeing an English-language “Squid Game” spinoff as his next project under his deal with the streamer, according to a report in Deadline. If something were to go into development, it would be the first scripted expansion of the show since it debuted in 2021.

No other details are out there, such as whether it’s a spinoff connected to the main show or a remake in English, but it could be Fincher’s next focus in 2025.

“Squid Game” remains Netflix’s all-time most-watched series by a humongous margin. They’re hoping for a repeat of that success this Christmas, when Season 2 debuts on December 26. Netflix also renewed “Squid Game” for a third and final season that will debut in 2025.

“Squid Game” was turned into an unscripted reality series by Netflix, “Squid Game: The Challenge,” which also proved wildly popular and even helped return the original series into the Netflix Top 10 for a period of time. It too has already been renewed for a second season. And Netflix also has a mobile video game arriving based on “Squid Game” later this year.

Fincher’s involvement with Netflix dates all the way back to 2013 with “House of Cards,” one of the first original series on Netflix. He’s also directed and produced “Mank,” “Love, Death, & Robots,” “Mindhunter,” and most recently last year’s “The Killer.”

“Squid Game” is created by Hwang Dong-hyuk, who became the first Asian director to win the Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series prize at the Emmys. The show stars Lee Jung-jae, Lee Byung-hun, Gong Yoo, and Wi Ha-jun.
