returns for a new adventure in 2027, developer Toys for Bob announced Sunday at Microsoft's Xbox Games Showcase. Spyro: A Realm Beyond will be the first new core Spyro game since 2008's The Legend of Spyro: Dawn of the Dragon, and Spyro's first new appearance since the Skylanders series.

Toys for Bob previously reimagined the Spyro franchise in 2011 with Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure, a toys-to-life game that starred Spyro but largely served as a way to introduce new characters that could be purchased as interactive figures. Toys for Bob also developed 2018's Spyro: Reignited Trilogy, which collected the dragon's first three adventures originally created by Insomniac Games.

For Spyro: A Realm Beyond, the developers say they want to evolve Spyro the Dragon's classic gameplay and "amplify the fantasy of being a dragon." Spyro will have "true dragon flight" in Spyro: A Realm Beyond, said Toys for Bob associate creative director Louis Studdert. "Players can be roaming the environment and take to the skies at a moment’s notice," Studdert told Polygon in an interview ahead of the game's reveal. The developer says that flight movement is both active and part of the exploration of A Realm Beyond's all-new world.

Studdert said the studio is focusing on "fluidity of movement," and making dragon flight more engaging than just pressing a button or hitting a speed-boost pad. Players will actively flap Spyro's wings and use updrafts to give the dragon a boost, Studdert explained. Spyro will even use his fire breath to light small fires to power his take-off into the sky, where players will engage with the environment to gain speed and fully explore A Realm Beyond's world.

Studdert and Paul Yan, Toys for Bob studio head and chief creative officer, emphasized that Spyro: A Realm Beyond is being built with both new players and longtime fans in mind. "We’ve listened to the community and fanbase," Studdert said, acknowledging that Spyro is a character that people love, and they want to respect that.

In a nod to fans of classic Spyro adventures, Toys for Bob has brought back Tom Kenny as the voice actor for Spyro the Dragon. Kenny began voicing the character in 1999, starting with Spyro 2: Ripto's Rage, and has appeared in multiple Spyro games.

Toys for Bob is keeping many details about Spyro: A Realm Beyond to itself for now. Studdert and Yan confirmed that the new Spyro game will be a single-player experience, but declined to confirm whether the game would be fully open-world. "More to come on that," Studdert said when asked about the structure of the game. Yan added, "Taking the freedom of flight, there’s a bunch of cascading implications of that. We followed our noses to where that leads, making sure that we preserve the foundation of Spyro and what really resonates with fans of Spyro."

Spyro: A Realm Beyond is slated for release in spring 2027 on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, Windows PC, and Xbox Series X.
