Prayers have been answered and the coping can end at last. Spyro is back at long last, with Spyro: A Realm Beyond set to release in spring 2027 on the Xbox Series X/S, PS5, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2.

In a new trailer revealed at the Xbox Showcase, we see Spyro mostly in his purple glory in cinematics for the most part. However, we also see a tiny bit of gameplay footage, showing Spyro freely flying through the sky. Another nice note is that Spyro's original voice actor Tom Kenny is returning to reprise the role.

This marks the first original Spyro game in almost 20 years. In a pre-show press event earlier in the week details remained scarce, but some additional details were revealed. The game is being developed in Unreal Engine 5, and you can rest assured that sheep will be present in the game despite their absence from the reveal itself.

Toys for Bob developers also emphasised the "active" flying mechanics present in A Realm Beyond, as Spyro is able to quickly swap between ground movement and free flight.

When asked by Eurogamer what made the flying in Spyro: A Realm Beyond active compared to other games (you "actively" fly in many games). To this, associate creative director Louis Studdert pointed to how environments react to how you fly, and the ability for players to interact with this environment to propel you further, dive for speed through narrow areas, and so on.

Spyro being back is a big moment for the show, there's no doubt. What he'll be up to remains a mystery, but thankfully we shouldn't have to wait too long to find out.
