Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Spider-Man: Brand New Day

The first 10 minutes of Spider-Man: Brand New Day could become a much bigger deal for the MCU's future than we realize. Between the events of No Way Home and Brand New Day, Peter Parker's life changed dramatically, as did his typical status quo as a superhero. As such, everything Spider-Man did in between his most recent movies could play a key role in what his next adventure might end up looking like.

Peter's decision to let the world forget him at the end of 2021's Spider-Man: No Way Home was a major emotional turning point in his life, one that saw him largely operating alone in the years that followed. While he didn't have anyone and let his life as Peter Parker fall to the wayside, the opening of Brand New Day confirms he did a ton of good as Spider-Man in New York City.

While Spider-Man: Brand New Day's opening montage is an exciting and energetic way to kick off the movie, it also proves his new status in New York, as well as the potential ripple effect that could have some fascinating consequences in future Spider-Man movies.

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's Opening Montage Reveals Peter Parker's New Status Quo

Spider-Man: Brand New Day's opening montage quickly catches audiences up on what Peter has been doing in the years after No Way Home while Ned Leeds and MJ have been away at MIT. Throwing himself into being Spider-Man with no one remembering who Peter Parker is after Doctor Strange's spell, protecting New York City becomes his sole purpose. As a result, the montage sees Spider-Man getting quite a bit done in the interim.

Recreating iconic Spider-Man comic book covers and moments along the way, we see Peter taking on the likes of Scorpion, Tarantula, Ramrod, Tombstone, Boomerang, as well as those connected to the Manfredi crime family. He's also developed a comics-accurate relationship with NYPD Detective Jean DeWolff, working together to tackle organized crime and more threats around the city. As such, it's clear that Spider-Man kept himself all kinds of busy, and has seemingly helped make a pretty big dent in New York crime.

Spider-Man Has Been Cemented As A Major New York Hero

The montage's implications extend beyond Peter's personal life. By the time the opening concludes, Spider-Man has become a recognized figure in New York, to the point that there was even footage showing that he was given a key to the city. That honor signals just how visible his work has become. Although Peter Parker might have erased himself from the lives of his closest friends, he hasn't disappeared from the city he protects, having since become one of its most beloved heroes.

Likewise, this marks a meaningful shift for the MCU's Spider-Man, one that's arguably more aligned with his typical status quo in the comics. After all, earlier MCU movies showed Peter trying to prove himself as an Avenger and eventually joining Earth's Mightiest Heroes alongside his mentor Tony Stark, as seen in Avengers: Infinity War and Endgame. Even after Iron Man's death in Endgame, the MCU's Spider-Man was still seen working with major figures like Nick Fury and Doctor Strange.

Now, Brand New Day's opening montage presents Spider-Man as more of a lone hero who's built an impressive reputation through consistent work over the last few years, becoming one of New York's most dependable heroes since the events of No Way Home (just like in the comics).

Interestingly enough, we already saw the effects of Spider-Man's work in New York before Brand New Day's release thanks to Daredevil: Born Again season 1. While the Webslinger himself wasn't featured, it did see Mayor Wilson Fisk targeting masked vigilantes in his campaign to control New York, and explicitly calling out Spider-Man alongside Daredevil and Punisher as major threats. Brand New Day also featured a reference to Kingpin as well.

This further signifies that Spider-Man has indeed made a major impact in New York, so much so that he gained the attention of the Kingpin himself. Naturally, this could easily lead to some fascinating consequences in the MCU's future.

Future Spider-Man Movies Could See New York's Criminals Striking Back

If Peter Parker has spent years taking down the Manfredis, Tombstone, members of The Hand, and more major New York criminals, it would be surprising if those victories didn't have some kind of consequences in the MCU's future. After all, organized crime is built on entire networks of money, major influence, and promises of retaliation if those systems get disrupted. Removing one boss can create a power vacuum, while causing problems for multiple factions could perhaps even encourage them to set aside their own rivalries long enough to deal with the bigger problem: Spider-Man.

When viewed with that lens, Brand New Day's opening montage likely carries some great potential for future Spider-Man movies. Tombstone could return with a vengeance after being humiliated by Spider-Man, while past foes could even join forces to take on the Webslinger when none of them could on their own, perhaps finally giving Sony Pictures the Sinister Six story they've been trying to make happen since the Andrew Garfield era.

More than anyone else, Wilson Fisk's Kingpin is an especially compelling possibility for Spider-Man's future. With Daredevil: Born Again ending after its third season, the MCU may have more room to use Kingpin after next year. Kingpin has been a longtime foe whom MCU fans have been dying to see take on Spider-Man, and actor Vincent D'Onofrio is just as eager to "beat Spider-Man's a**."

With both Daredevil: Born Again and Brand New Day indicating that Spider-Man has done more than enough in New York to warrant Kingpin's notice, perhaps the time has finally come to make a Kingpin/Spider-Man showdown an MCU reality. Likewise, Kingpin finally making a big-screen debut would also create an ideal opportunity for Spider-Man to join forces with other New York vigilantes, like Charlie Cox's Daredevil, and Brand New Day already got the ball rolling on a full vigilante trio team-up after featuring Spider-Man's epic team-up with Jon Bernthal's Punisher.

In that sense, the first ten minutes of Spider-Man: Brand New Day do a lot more than just bridge the gap between Peter Parker's last two movies, instead establishing a more seasoned Spider-Man, how his efforts have been reshaping New York, and potentially planting the seeds for the city's criminal underworld to push back in future chapters.
