Destin Daniel Cretton will continue his partnership with Sony, could that include Spider-Man 5?

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has broken box office records this year to become the highest-grossing domestic release of all time and the third highest worldwide. It should come as no surprise then that Sony is eager to snatch up director Destin Daniel Cretton for even more projects, Spider-Man or otherwise. That's exactly what has happened, with Sony revealing it has entered a three-year overall deal with Cretton.
The deal, as revealed by The Hollywood Reporter, will see Cretton developing films to produce through Hisako, the production company he runs with Jeyun Munford. “Destin is the real deal and we are lucky as hell to be in ongoing business with him and his team. Po’okela!" said Sony Picture's motion picture group CEO and chairman Tom Rothman. Cretton added, “I had the best time making Brand New Day with Tom Rothman, Sanford Panitch and their team, and I’m so excited to tell more meaningful stories that people can experience in theaters around the world.”
2026 has been a banner year for Cretton. Brand New Day launched to widespread acclaim from fans and critics. The film has grossed over $900 million at the U.S. box office, beating out a record previously held by Star Wars: The Force Awakens. In addition to Spider-Man, Cretton co-created and executive-produced Marvel's Wonder Man series. He also directed the first two episodes. The show was a hit, even garnering an Emmy nomination for its charismatic lead, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II. Sadly, Disney canceled the show despite initially announcing plans for a second season.

IMAGE: PolygonCretton's next project will be Lionsgate's live-action Naruto film. Casting is reportedly underway, with Charles Melton rumored to join the project as Kakashi. The film is set to begin shooting early next year. There has also been talk that Cretton will develop a Hawaii Five-0 feature film for Paramount.
While Cretton and Sony's deal makes no mention of directing, Sony is eager to get the director back on board for the inevitable Brand New Day follow-up. Marvel hasn't revealed any official plans for a fifth Tom Holland film, but after the box office success of Brand New Day, everyone involved will likely want to at least attempt to get a sequel off the ground.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day is now in theaters. Cretton's other superhero pic, Shang Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, is streaming on Disney Plus.
