39 years after the original movie, Spaceballs 2 gets an official title and debuts its first trailer.
In the original Spaceballs movie, the wise Yogurt (Mel Brooks) tells Lone Starr (Bill Pullman) and his friends, "God willing, we'll all meet again in Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money." While the line was meant to be a joke, it has led to speculation that the sequel to Brooks' parody film would turn Yogurt's words into the actual title.
At CinemaCon's Amazon MGM Studios panel, where ScreenRant was in attendance, it was confirmed that instead of Spaceballs 2: The Search for More Money, the sequel's title is Spaceballs: The New One. Brooks announced it in a video that was shown during the panel and released online, with the footage referencing Yogurt's line, signals being literally jammed, and Brooks explaining the official title. Watch the video below:
Director Josh Greenbaum, Bill Pullman, Rick Moranis, Daphne Zuniga, Josh Gad, and Lewis Pullman were present at the panel, with Moranis receiving a huge round of applause from the audience before proceeding to show the first trailer. Check out a description of the footage below:
We see space. The narrator describes it as dark, cold, and infinite. We see Dark Helmet’s helmet in the sand. We see a lightsaber-type battle. The narrator says Spaceballs 2 was a myth for years. We see flashes of the new film, including characters landing on the ground in superhero fashion, a portal that looks almost identical to the Doctor Strange portals in Avengers: Endgame. Rick Moranis is seen in the helmet, he stands at a urinal as a Na'vi comes to the urinal next to him. Moranis stares in shock.
Given the several decades of pop culture that have passed and newer Star Wars characters ripe for parody, Spaceballs: The New One has plenty of material to pull from. The return of Moranis' Dark Helmet, an opening reminiscent of The Force Awakens' first teaser, and lightsabers (which were called Schwartz rings in the original film) confirm that Star Wars will be parodied, but the trailer also teases that the sequel will be making fun of Avengers: Endgame's iconic portal scene and James Cameron's Avatar movies as well.
Rick Moranis stopped acting for many years, which has already made his return notable, and it does not seem as though he is back in a small capacity given his central role in the trailer. Dark Helmet will seemingly continue to be one of the most prominent characters in the new film, including in his bathroom interactions with the Na'vi.
Along with Bill Pullman, Moranis, and Zuniga, the last of whom played Princess Vespa in the original, Spaceballs: The New One's cast brings back Brooks and George Wyner. Brooks, who is a producer on the sequel, previously played President Skroob in addition to Yogurt, while Wyner portrayed Colonel Sandurz.
Joining Pullman, Moranis, Zuniga, Brooks, and Wyner in Spaceballs: The New One are newcomers Gad, Keke Palmer, Anthony Carrigan, and Lewis Pullman, who is the real-life son of Bill Pullman. Gad is also one of the movie's producers, and he co-wrote the script with Benji Samit and Dan Hernandez. In early December, Gad shared that filming had wrapped, and it was later announced that the theatrical release date would be April 23, 2027.
