Sophia Bush's soccer star girlfriend Ashlyn Harris finally reveals why she divorced Ali Krieger

Ashlyn Harris - who is dating Hollywood actress Sophia Bush - split from wife Ali Krieger in late 2023.

And now the 40-year-old soccer star has made rare comments about why the marriage ended.

'I respect her and I’m proud of what we did. I don’t resent or regret anything about the life that I built with her; it just wasn't for me,' she told Us Weekly about Krieger, who is also a soccer player.

The athlete added, 'She’s the mother of my children. I respect her as a mom, I respect her as a player, I respect what she's done for the game. I don't ever want to speak poorly about the mother of my children.'

Their divorce was finalized in January 2025. 

Together Harris and Krieger, 41, coparent their daughter Sloane, five, and son Ocean, three.

'Now we just get to be at ease and happy and in love and raise these kids in this family. We’re just so grateful and lucky,' Harris said about the blended unit.

Bush filed for divorce from her husband of 13 months, Grant Hughes, in August 2023.

When romance rumors started swirling about Harris and Bush later that year, the former One Tree Hill actress was accused of being a 'homewrecker.'     

Harris, who is promoting her documentary Gamechangers: The Ashlyn Harris Story, told Us Weekly about that time, 'When all of this news was going crazy, it was really important for me to be intentional that I was a good human during a really hard season that became very public. 

'I never wanted to speak ill about the mother of my children in front of them, with other friends. It was really important to me.'

She called her current romance a 'season of love and tenderness and care and companionship.'

And she effused about Bush: 'She is home. She is a feeling that I’ve been yearning and longing for for so long. I just feel my shoulders relax. I move differently.'

The retired soccer sensation added, 'I think what people see is two people who have kind of had it really hard and they found each other.

'It took a long time. We’ve been chasing and trying and doing all of the work.'

Bush announced their relationship by penning an April 2024 essay in Glamour magazine, in which she also came out as 'queer.'

She wrote that she and Harris first became acquainted in 2019 but did not become a couple until October 2023 – after their respective marriages fell apart.

In her coming out essay, the human rights activist – who was previously married to her One Tree Hill co-star Chad Michael Murray – revealed that her past male partners had been aware that she was also attracted to women. 

This past Mother's Day Harris used Instagram to share photos with her two kids, as well as a snapshot of them with her girlfriend.

She called motherhood her 'greatest mirror,' adding, 'My children didn’t just make me a mother. They made me more human. More aware. More intentional. More alive.

'And while I’m still learning every single day, there’s nothing I’m more proud of than becoming better because of them.'
