SK Hynix shares fell nearly 3% early Friday before rebounding to close 4.42% higher.
SK Hynix Faces Questions Over Separate Listing
South Korea’s Financial Supervisory Service warned Monday that a US flotation could clash with rules on listing subsidiaries separately from their parent companies. Governor Lee Chan-jin said regulators were reviewing the plan’s treatment of minority shareholders.
SK Hynix said market conditions, not tighter listing restrictions, drove its decision. The company considered pre-IPO fundraising and a public offering, but stopped reviewing both.
Solidigm Still Needs a New US Factory
Solidigm produces NAND flash memory and storage drives for data centers. Its existing plants have limited room to raise output. Rival chipmaker Micron has faced a sharp stock decline despite analysts pointing to tight memory supplies.
A listing could have helped finance a new American plant without placing the full cost on SK Hynix. It might also have allowed investors to value Solidigm separately, an outcome the parent company previously sought. Reports placed Solidigm’s possible valuation near $150 billion.
SK Hynix approved a 40 trillion won share repurchase and cancellation program in August. It has pledged to return more than half of cumulative free cash flow to shareholders through 2027, using buybacks and dividends.
AI infrastructure spending remains a key source of demand for storage chips. This week, Applied Digital announced a Texas data center partnership involving a planned 50-megawatt facility, as operators continue investing in computing capacity.
Chip Selloff Clouds Investment Outlook
Semiconductor shares have suffered broad losses this month as markets reassess the cost of AI development. The Nasdaq Composite fell on Thursday, while South Korea’s KOSPI endured heavy selling earlier in the week.
Despite the selloff, Nvidia reported stronger data center revenue in recent results. Chief Executive Jensen Huang has said he does not expect an excess supply of memory chips by 2029. SK Hynix has not named a replacement funding plan or set a timetable for Solidigm’s next factory.
