The Oscar nominations are finally here, and usually, that marks the beginning of the end of another long award season. This year, though, the nominations come almost two full months before the award show itself on March 15. Strap in, folks. It’s only getting wilder from here.
In terms of genre films, io9’s pick for best genre film of the year, Sinners, led the way with a record-breaking 16 nominations—making it now the most-nominated film in Oscars history—including Best Picture, Best Director for Ryan Coogler, Best Actor for Michael B. Jordan, and Best Supporting nods for both Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo. Guillermo del Toro’s Frankenstein got 15 nods too, including Best Picture, while Bugonia had a decent showing with 10 nominations—including another Best Picture nod.
Other significant genre films that might find themselves with gold statues in March are KPop Demon Hunters (which was nominated for Best Animated Feature and Best Song) and Avatar: Fire and Ash (which was nominated for Best Visual Effects and Best Costume Design).
