The wider Emotional Spectrum encompasses several distinct Lantern colors, each channeling an emotion in their own Corps. Atrocitus founded the rage-powered Red Lanterns, while the Orange Lantern Larfleeze decided to be theonly member of his avarice-fueled Corps, though he has built an army from his victims in the form of ghost-like constructs. On the more heroic side, the Blue Lantern Corps embody hope, with members like Saint Walker using their rings to inspire others; and the Indigo Tribe channel compassion, often employing their rings to imitate the abilities of other Lantern factions. The Star Sapphires, whose violet light represents love, can use their energy to protect and heal others.
Before all other Lantern Corps were created, one powerful Green Lantern Corps alum became the first cosmic power ring wearer to break off from the force and set up his own faction, wielding the power of a different part of the Emotional Spectrum.
The Sinestro Corps Were Created By The Greatest Green Lantern
The Yellow Lanterns Have One Of The Best Lanterns Ever As Their Leader
Thaal Sinestro earned his reputation as an exceptionally capable Green Lantern after wiping crime from his home planet, Korugar. He believed that fear of punishment could maintain peace more effectively than the Guardians of the Universe's reliance on individual willpower, but his authoritarian methods eventually exposed his true nature. When Hal Jordan discovered the extent of Sinestro's dictatorship, the Guardians stripped the Korugarian of his ring and banished him to the antimatter universe of Qward. There, Sinestro found weapons that served as the opposite of the Green Lantern rings, and he built an army around his philosophy of fear.
Technically, the name Sinestro Corps itself received an unusual in-universe explanation, as Booster Gold suggested the name while trying to manipulate Sinestro.
During the early stages of his campaign, Sinestro gathered warriors from across the universe and provided them with yellow power rings, fueled by their own Central Power Battery. The Sinestro Corps also developed a hierarchy built around Sinestro's authority and the recruitment of particularly dangerous individuals, including figures such as Arkillo, who became one of its most prominent enforcers. In Sinestro Corps War, Sinestro launched a full assault against the Green Lanterns and cemented the Yellow Lanterns as a proper military force capable of threatening the Guardians' authority and challenging the Green Lanterns on their own terms.
The Sinestro Corps' Yellow Lanterns Include Dozens Of Powerful Villains
The Sinestro Corps Has Added Several Powerhouses To Their Ranks
While Sinestro's background as the greatest Green Lantern who ever lived makes him a top threat to the universe, but he's accompanied by an army of similarly powerful Yellow Lanterns. His chief enforcer, Arkillo, is a brutal alien warrior who acts as the Sinestro Corps' drill instructor, like an evil counterpart of the Green Lanterns' Kilowog. Lyssa Drak is the keeper of the Book of Parallax, Bedovian is an exceptionally lethal marksman, and Karu-Sil is a savage warrior raised by alien predators. Other notable members include Green Lantern Abin Sur's Amon Sur, and Despotellis, a sentient virus whose microscopic nature allows it to infect and kill from within.
In blackest day, in brightest night,
Beware your fears made into light.
Let those who try to stop what's right,
Burn like my power—Sinestro's might!
The Sinestro Corps has also attracted several temporary recruits, including villains like Superman's extraterrestrial tyrany enemy Mongul and Hank Henshaw a.k.a. Cyborg Superman. The Anti-Monitor himself has been part of the Sinestro Corps, rebuilt by the Weaponers of Qward. During Sinestro Corps War, a yellow power ring selects Batman because of his ability to instill fear, but he rejects its attempt to recruit him and removes it before it can make him a full member. Scarecrow, on the other hand, fully embraces the power ring of fear during Blackest Night.
Introduced in the 1990s as the monstrous identity assumed by Hal Jordan after the destruction of Coast City, Parallax was originally presented as the corrupted form of Hal Jordan, consumed by grief after his home city is destroyed. However, Green Lantern: Rebirth later recontextualized these events with the revelation that Parallax is actually an ancient parasitic entity associated with fear. During Sinestro Corps War, Parallax becomes one of Sinestro's most terrifying assets when it possesses Kyle Rayner and exploits his grief. And later on, DC confirmed that Parallax is the Emotional Entity that represents fear, and that its power can be harnessed for non-destructive purposes.
