Lightsaber duels in the Star Wars trilogies.

Simon Kinberg is developing a new trilogy for Star Wars, which will include “brand-new characters and a new plot” – so will these be Star Wars Episodes 10 – 12, or not? As the current list of Star Wars cinematic projects in development are all individual movies, the news that Star Wars Rebels co-creator Simon Kinberg is developing an entirely new trilogy is an interesting prospect. Deadline initially reported that Kinberg's movies are meant to be a direct continuation of the Skywalker saga. According to The Hollywood Reporter, however, Kinberg’s movies are “not meant to be a continuation of the Skywalker saga … The intent here is to have brand-new characters and a brand-new story, and not have it be a continuation, according to sources.”

Deadline, which initially claimed that the movies “will comprise episodes 10-12 of the Skywalker saga," have doubled down on their initial findings, writing:

“Insiders disputed my intel that Kinberg will continue that storyline, saying this will instead begin a new saga, and sit alongside Star Wars percolating projects with James Mangold, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, Taika Waititi and Donald Glover. As usual, Lucasfilm and Disney are not commenting.”

The writer of The Hollywood Reporter’s account, Borys Kit, has subsequently taken to social media to reiterate that THR’s sources confirm that Kinberg’s new trilogy will not be Episodes 10-12. Without official word from Lucasfilm and Disney, and no real word on the story or the characters involved, it’s hard to tell which report to believe.
