Season 2 of AppleTV’s hit post-apocalyptic thriller Silo ended with the tenacious engineer turned sheriff Juliette Nichols (Rebecca Ferguson) making it back from her trip to Silo 17 and warning Silo 18 that the outside world isn’t safe. The season 3 premiere “Who Are You?” revealed that new head of IT Camille Sims (Alexandria Riley) has been keeping Juliette under control ever since by giving her memory-loss drugs. The effects are so strong that Juliette can’t even recognize her best friends, and she’s been turned into a figurehead mayor by her former enemies. But Ferguson tells Polygon that beneath her seemingly helpless exterior is the same fierce character who inspired a revolution.

“When you’ve lived in a character for so long, the character is so sedimented,” Ferguson said in a video interview. “There’s a DNA to her. It’s the way she walks. It’s the way she handles people.”

Ferguson said that Juliette has grown a lot across those seasons. The socially awkward engineer has had to make lots of new alliances, especially last season when she “was thrown into a Silo with one really weird man” and worked with the childlike Solo (Steve Zahn) to both fix Silo 17 and make it back to her own home.

“Taking away all this memory, there’s still all the rooted character creation that we have done,” Ferguson said.

“Who Are You?” demonstrated Camille’s drugs aren’t perfect. Juliette remembers speaking with the former head of IT Bernard Holland (Tim Robbins) outside the Silo and that there’s something very important she needs to do. A lot of work went into mapping Juliette’s key memories and what would come to the surface.

“We had two writers who just worked on memory,” showrunner Graham Yost told Polygon.

Season 3, episode 2, “It’s All Good,” which premieres on July 10, peels back more of those layers as it reveals the way Juliette is being controlled and how she might be able to recover. Apple provided Polygon with an exclusive clip showing Juliette reuniting with some of her most reluctant allies – smuggler Patrick Kennedy (Rick Gomez), hacker Danny (Will Merrick), and sheriff’s department clerk Sandy (Chipo Chung) – who want to know what really happened when she was sent out of the Silo.

Silo 18 is in a lot of danger if Juliette can’t remember Solo’s warning about the poison that could kill everyone inside. Suppressing Juliette’s memories might have created a temporary peace, but it doesn’t seem to be a sustainable solution to the crisis.
