Silent Hill fans have been begging Konami to make the game playable on modern hardware
Image: KonamiSilent Hill — the first entry in Konami's legendary psychological horror franchise — turned 27 years old this week. But for all its influence on the many horror games that came after it, the original Silent Hill has never received a modern port or remaster. Digital PC game storefront GOG.com wants to change that by making the game accessible to PC players, and stated as much in an X post celebrating the game's recent anniversary.
While there's nothing definitive regarding a rerelease of Silent Hill on modern platforms, there's reason to believe GOG.com could actually make that happen. "If there's one company able to make it available, it's us," GOG.com said, and asked for the public's help to make it happen.
"Do we bombard konami with emails or something," one X user asked in response to the post. "Like can you at least outline what the ordinary people can do."
"Vote and share stories on the GOG Dreamlist, simply buy DRM-free on our platform, or become a GOG Patron to support the mission in the most direct way," GOG replied. "Everything helps us do more of what we do."
GOG's Dreamlist is exactly what it sounds like: a list of beloved games that players are desperate to preserve. Players can submit games for consideration, vote on games that have already been listed, and share stories about why those games are in need of preservation. Silent Hill is currently the third-most voted for game on the list, with 116,577 votes.
"This game simply helped shape me in[to] the person I am today," one Silent Hill player's story reads. "It still brings so many fond memories of hanging with my siblings late at night, getting scared out of our minds!"
"Silent Hill has always been an important franchise to me and having them preserved in a way that truly keeps them alive is so important to me," another player wrote. "Especially for SH1 which has been unavailable in any capacity for so long."
Silent Hill is currently available to play on the original PlayStation (assuming you have one, and also have a copy of the game that hasn't succumbed to disc rot), and on PlayStation 2 via backward compatibility. It can be purchased digitally via the PlayStation Store, but only on PlayStation 3 — PS3 store purchases cannot be made directly with bank cards — players must first add funds to a digital wallet. It's playable on the PSP, assuming you own one and purchased the game before the PSP store was taken down in 2021. It's still available to play on the PS Vita (again, assuming you still own one) but is only available via Remote Play through the PS3.
This leaves most players with a choice: acquire the necessary hardware along with a copy of the game (which goes for anything from $300 to $2,000 on eBay), or resort to emulation, which often comes with its own host of issues.
Two Silent Hill titles are at the top of GOG's Dreamlist, with Silent Hill in third place and Silent Hill 2 in fourth place.Image: GOG.com via PolygonA Silent Hill remake is currently in the works at Bloober Team, the studio responsible for 2024's acclaimed remake of Silent Hill 2. But remakes do not sate players' thirst for a chance to re-experience the original game. After all, despite the well-received remake, the original Silent Hill 2 is also pretty high on GOG's Dreamlist. It's currently in fourth place — just below the original Silent Hill — with 115,645 votes. It's clear that players don't just want a modernized reimagining of the game, they want a way to play the game in its original form on modern PCs.
Konami has recently shown renewed commitment to the Silent Hill franchise, and is aiming to release a new Silent Hill game every year. So far, it's kept up with that promise. The Silent Hill 2 remake launched in 2024, Silent Hill f arrived in 2025, and a new title, Silent Hill: Townfall, is set to arrive sometime this year.
But while we have no shortage of new Silent Hill games, beautiful remakes of old Silent Hill games, and even a third ill-fated attempt to adapt the Silent Hill franchise to film, Konami still hasn't shown any indication it's interested in making older Silent Hill games playable on modern hardware. Which is a shame, because as good as Bloober's Silent Hill 2 remake was — and as good as its Silent Hill remake is likely to be — nothing compares to experiencing the game in its original form.
