Sigma has announced the full-frame 50mm F1.4 CL DG Contemporary, the first entry in a new line of lenses that will sit within its affordable I series, which is focused on vintage aesthetics and metal construction. The CL line retains that – this lens is made out of aluminum and has a depth of field scale, a knurled screw-on hood and aperture and focus rings – but is also designed to be small and lightweight in a way that the I series historically hasn’t been.
The first entry is the full-frame 50mm F1.4 CL DG Contemporary.

The lens is around 65mm long and weighs 375g, a substantial reduction from Sigma’s Art-series 50mm F1.4 DG DN, which is 110mm (4.3″) long, and 670g (23.6oz). It’s also only a touch heavier than the I series 50mm F2, and is a touch smaller. It takes 52mm filters.
SigmaSigma has made it clear that part of its focus on size has been letting go of the need for “sterile, clinical sharpness,” especially at the corners, which look to be especially soft. The company’s press release is full of words that show that this will be a lens with character, saying that it’ll offer a “distinct artistic signature” and have “thoughtfully developed bokeh” with “smooth, organic falloff.” The lens is constructed from nine elements in six groups, with three aspheric lenses and one FLD low dispersion element.
That’s not to say that Sigma has entirely given up on traditional markers of optical quality; it still promises the lens will have well-controlled ghosting and aberration, with no internal reflections. It has a minimum focusing distance of 0.45m (1′ 6″).
Despite the lens’s focus on compactness, Sigma says it still focused on providing a “rugged, tactile, and premium feel” to the lens’s construction, and it will come with a magnetic lens cap. It’s also sealed for dust and splash resistance, and has a moisture and oil-repellant coating on the front element.
SigmaThe lens’s focusing system is also built for compactness. Rather than focusing internally, Sigma says it uses a “new whole-lens extension focus.” The company is also driving focus in a new way, taking the coils and magnets from its linear motors and arranging them in a circle to create a “slim, high-torque autofocus mechanism.”
According to Sigma, this also lets you immediately switch to manual mode just by turning the focus ring (which happens to have hard stops at infinity and minimum focus distance), even if the lens is focusing, rather than needing to flip an AF/MF switch. However, the company also says it can wobble a bit, thus won’t be as well-suited to continuous autofocus for video.
Sigma hasn’t announced pricing or an exact release date yet, saying that it expects to launch the 50mm F1.4 CL DG Contemporary in “early Spring, 2027.” When it does come out, it’ll be available for L and Sony E-mounts in black and silver finishes.
