Shawn Johnson, Andrew East Share Why They Have a Plastic Surgeon On-Call for 4-Year-Old Son Jett
Shawn Johnson East is providing the latest on her youngest after his surgery.
Shawn updated fans on how 2-year-old son Barrett “Bear” East—who she shares with husband Andrew East—is recovering after a "definitely needed" visit to an ear, nose and throat surgeon.
"Updates because it’s been a while and I’ve left you all hanging," Shawn captioned a video posted on Instagram Stories July 30, according to People. "First UPDATE Bear had his second set of tubes put in today and his adenoids removed. Surgery went great."
He underwent an adenoidectomy, which is a procedure where a child's adenoid glands (located in the upper nose) are taken out to clear the airway after excessive swelling from infection, per the Cleveland Clinic. The surgery is typically quick and begins with administering anesthesia.
However, the 34-year-old noted that her toddler's reaction to the anesthesia was challenging.
"It was a rough wake up from anesthesia, but we are back home," Shawn wrote, while explaining in the video, "When kids come in out of anesthesia, it’s pretty rough. This was by far the roughest."
Despite the bumpy post-op transition, Shawn and Andrew—also parents to Drew Hazel East, 6, and Jett James East, 4—are still encouraged by the little one's strength amid the medical stress.
"He’s just kind of our fighter, and always has been," she admitted. "And he really fought that anesthesia."
And the parents, married since 2016, have renewed optimism for Bear's continued recovery, especially as their thirdborn showed progress in the hours after his return home.

"We’ve been home for probably five hours, and all of a sudden it’s like there’s been a switch flipped," Shawn detailed. "They were kind of worried at the outpatient because he was refusing water, juice, popsicles, everything. They’re like 'Make sure you call us if that continues.'"
But fortunately, by the time Shawn was crafting her update, she was able to list yogurt, pizza, popsicles, cherries, cantaloupe and avocado as part of the grocery haul Bear was hilariously "demanding."
As she put it, "He’s a bottomless pit right now."
