Shania Twain set for Hollywood biopic at age 60... after her 'unrecognizable' appearance at award show

Shania Twain is taking a big step in her career following the success of the Michael Jackson biopic, which has raked in over $800 million worldwide since its release.

According to Deadline, the 60-year-old country music icon's life and career will soon be the subject of a new film for Sony Pictures.

It will reportedly be helmed by singer/actress Leah McKendrick, who will also pen the film's script.

McKendrick's credits include the upcoming Netflix rom-com Voicemails for Isabelle and the Yvonne Strahovski-starring 2023 feature Scrambled.

The outlet reports that Twain will co-produce the biopic with Amie Karp, who produced Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (2024) and Ghostbusters: Afterlife (2021).

The Daily Mail has reached out to representatives for Twain for comment but has yet to hear back.

Twain is considered not only one of the greatest country acts but one of the greatest and best-selling musical artists of all time.

Twain was catapulted to superstardom in the mid-1990s with the release of her second studio album The Woman in Me.

The album, released in 1995, also featured the star's first big hit Any Man of Mine. 

Since then, Twain has released six studio albums over the course of her over three decade-long career in music.

She is a five-time Grammy winner with 18 nominations to her name.

Her wins include Best Contemporary Country Album for The Woman In Me as well as Best Female Country Vocal Performance for her 1997 ballad You're Still The One.

Twain was last nominated for a Grammy Award in 2005.

Since bursting onto the scene over 30 years ago, Twain has sold over 100 million records worldwide and has garnered seven number-one singles on the Billboard charts.

News of her rumored biopic comes amid the success of Michael, the Michael Jackson biopic starring the late star's nephew Jaafar Jackson, 29.

Released in April, Michael follows 'the early life of musician Michael Jackson, from the discovery of his talent as the lead of the Jackson Five to the artist whose creative ambition fueled a pursuit to become the biggest entertainer in the world,' as per IMDb.

Despite controversy surrounding the film, Michael has garnered nearly $400 million domestically at the box office and over $500 million worldwide.

It's the latest in a string of biopics that have dominated the 2020s, including the Timothee Chalamet-led Bob Dylan film A Complete Unknown and the Bruce Springsteen tale A Complete Unknown starring Jeremy Allen White.

Prior to hype surrouding her potential biopic, Twain shocked with her 'unrecognizable' appearance at the 2026 ACM Awards. 

Ahead of the ceremony in May, the superstar showed off a very taut face on the red carpet while wearing a sparkling silver gown and leather gloves.

Her seemingly ageless appearance sparked shock among fans, with one writing on X, 'She looks like a different person and not in a good way. She was a naturally beautiful woman. This doesn’t look like her at all!' 

'Who is that?' someone else questioned, while another fan chimed in writing, 'Doesn't look anything like her.'

'Christ it doesn't even look like the same person!'

'Literally wouldn't know it was her. How does she not get freaked out when she looks in a mirror and doesn't see herself????' 

'I hate to say this because I love her... but I do not recognize her.'

'Omg.. That Don't Impress Me Much..' one fan quipped.

'She has gone for the "I can't even tell if my face is smiling look."'

'Sad that women go to this extreme,' someone else wrote. 

Another commentator compared her to two Hollywood stars who recently stepped out looking markedly different: 'What is happening? First Jim Carrey, then John Trovolta and now her.'

Others praised Twain's look but pointed out that she no longer looks 'like herself.'

'Oh girl I love your original beauty. You are beautiful but it's not the original “you” now.'

'Good work, but unfortunately she doesn't look like herself.'  

'Wtf?!? No way. That isn't her right?' another fan asked.

Twain hosted the event, held May 17 at MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, in which featured performances from Lainey Wilson, Blake Shelton, Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert and more.
