Your Fujifilm camera ships with defaults that can quietly sabotage your photos, from blurry low-light shots to white balance that shifts without your say-so. Most of these settings sit hidden in menus you rarely open, which is why so many owners never realize anything is wrong until they review the files.

The Auto ISO problem tops the list in a rundown from Chris Lee of pal2tech, who walks through seven common mistakes across bodies like the Fujifilm X-S20 and X-T5. Inside the ISO Auto Setting, the minimum shutter speed defaults to Auto, which hands the camera the decision about how slow your shutter can go. It picks roughly the inverse of your lens focal length, so a 30mm lens gets you about 1/60th of a second. Point that at a moving subject in dim light and you end up with blur you didn't ask for. Lee sets a fixed minimum of 1/250th of a second, then raises his maximum sensitivity to 12,800 so the camera has room to lift ISO instead of dropping the shutter.

The problems Lee catalogs range from the obvious to the genuinely sneaky. Your flash refuses to fire, long exposure noise reduction disappears, and extended ISOs like 25,600 stop working, all because the camera is set to electronic shutter instead of mechanical. On the X-S20, a rear command dial that's easy to knock out of place can shift exposure compensation a stop or two while the camera rides in your bag. Then there's the touchscreen, where your nose can swipe the focus point across the frame while you shoot through the viewfinder. Lee shows how to restrict which areas of the screen stay active, or shut the touch function off entirely. Each fix is a menu dive, and he points to dedicated videos for the deeper ones.

Two of the mistakes deserve extra attention because they bite hardest during paid work. Custom settings can silently rewrite themselves if Auto Update Custom Setting is enabled. Adjust your white balance during a sunset shoot, pull up that same C1 recipe at a wedding a week later, and your guests come out tinted blue. The dual SD card slots are the other one. Out of the box, they run in Sequential mode, filling slot one before touching slot two, which means no live backup while you shoot. Switching to Backup writes every frame to both cards, though Lee notes your write speed drops to whatever your slowest card can manage.

The thread running through all of this is that Fujifilm's defaults are tuned for a casual owner, not for someone shooting with intent. That's true across the camera industry now, as bodies get smarter and take on more automatic decisions to smooth the experience for first-time buyers. The tradeoff is that a photographer who never audits those defaults inherits choices made by an engineer who has no idea what you're shooting. The practical takeaway applies to any brand: when you unbox a camera, treat the factory settings as a starting draft, not a finished configuration. Walk the menu once with a notepad, decide what each automated behavior should do for the way you actually work, and lock it down. The dynamic range example proves the point. Set DR200 or DR400 and the camera forces a higher minimum ISO, 320 or 640, to pull off its highlight protection, which is why Lee saw ISO 500 on a NASA shoot when he'd asked for 125.
