See the First Image of Captain America's New Costume, Just Released by Marvel

Marvel has revealed a new costume for Steve Rogers' Captain America, updating the Super Soldier as he joins an Avengers roster like none he's seen before.

Subjected to unique experiments during WWII, Captain America reached peak human potential, battling fascism with his iconic shield, constructed from a unique, unbreakable alloy that has never been recreated. After being frozen in ice, Steve Rogers awoke in the modern day as the ultimate 'Man Out of Time.'

That codename has grown less and less applicable over the years, as Steve Rogers has acclimatized to the modern day and built a life in the present. Thankfully, Marvel has the answer, and it comes with a significant redesign...

Steve Rogers Is the New Captain America 2099

In a newly released preview of What If…? Captain America #1 - from Marc Guggenheim, Ron Lim, Andrew Dalhouse and Clayton Cowles - fans see a new reality where Steve Rogers missed the 'modern day,' being unfrozen in the distant year of 2099.

The first page of the comic shows Steve Rogers' new costume, with a diagonal flag pattern across his chest and his signature white star on the opposite pectoral. His costume is far more armored, with the unusual combo of blue knee armor and red legs. The costume embraces the unique aesthetic Marvel has created around its Marvel 2099 imprint.

Debuting in 1992, Marvel 2099 is a retro-future imprint depicting a potential future of the Marvel Universe, where corporations reign supreme and heroic legacies are often misremembered. Traditionally, different versions of this future have been depicted depending on the hero who's being updated, but recently Marvel merged the disparate '2099' comics into the singular reality of Earth-2099.

This is the world into which Steve Rogers awakens... or at least a version of it that didn't have Steve Rogers making the past a better place. In an echo of his original return, Steve Rogers is once again awoken by the Avengers - this time the heroes of 2099 and their Eco Central allies.

2026 Is Putting Steve Rogers Through Hell... Literally

Steve Rogers awakens in 2099 surrounded by this far future's versions of Spider-Man, Ghost Rider, Hawkeye and more, contending with a world where he wasn't there to fight back against iconic Avengers foes including Thanos, Ultron, Korvac and Kang the Conqueror. Fans can look forward to seeing the future that resulted from the original Avengers forming without Captain America to bond them together.

Whatever this future looks like, it's likely to be a huge challenge for Steve Rogers, who is not just encountering a dark future, but one he was supposed to be there to save. However, unbelievably, this might not be the worst place Steve Rogers' Cap finds himself this week, as is apparent from a preview for the upcoming Captain America #14.

Over in his solo series, Steve has been summoned to Hell by Doctor Doom, who has asked for his help leading a rebellion against Mephisto. Not only is he surrounded by demons and pursued by his old nemesis the Red Skull, but he knows that Doctor Doom will betray him at the first opportunity - if Doom's former victims don't destroy their souls first.

This week, fans can see for themselves which shocking environment presents the bigger challenge - a far future where Captain America wasn't there to save the day, or Hell itself alongside one of the deadliest villains to ever live. Whichever proves the winner, it's hard to argue that Captain America has ever had a harder week in Marvel Comics.
