Ghostface is chasing Scream 7 past a major box office milestone.
The killer has returned alongside Neve Campbell as final girl Sidney Prescott in the 2026 slasher sequel, which arrived 30 years after the debut of the original hit. 2026's Scream 7 has had some extreme ups and downs. After a $63.6 million debut that beat Scream VI's $44.4 million as the best in the franchise, it was hit with the franchise's worst week 2 drop, with its 73.3% fall surging past Scream 4's 62.4%.
Now, the pendulum has swung back around. Per Deadline, Scream 7 earned $2.2 million on Friday. This pushed its cumulative domestic total to $100.4 million, making it the fourth Scream movie to pass the $100 million domestic milestone.
It only took 15 days for it to cross that major milestone. In doing so, it has smashed a record for the franchise, becoming the fastest Scream installment to pass $100 million by far. The previous record-holder was 2023's Scream VI, which took 28 days to do so.
Below, see a breakdown of how long it took each of the Scream movies to pass the $100 million milestone, as well as their overall performance both in domestic theaters and worldwide:
|
Scream (1996) |
157+ |
$103 million |
$173 million |
|
Scream 2 (1997) |
135+ |
$101.4 million |
$172.4 million |
|
Scream 3 (2000) |

$89.1 million |
$161.8 million |
|
Scream 4 (2011) |
N/A |
$38.2 million |
$96 million |
|
Scream (2022) |
N/A |
$81.6 million |
$138.8 million |
|
Scream VI (2023) |
28 |
$108.4 million |
$169.1 million |
|
Scream 7 (2026) |
15 |
~$105.6 million (by Sunday) |
$153 million+ (so far) |
It is only a matter of time before Scream 7 becomes the highest-grossing installment at the domestic box office, as it will likely need to earn just $2.8 million more after Sunday in order to surpass the $108.4 million domestic gross of Scream VI, which is now the only entry that has hit a higher total in North America. It could very well earn that total by the end of its third full week in theaters.
This milestone, and the speed at which it was achieved, shows that it is still highly likely that Scream 7 will become the highest-grossing Scream movie worldwide before long despite its brutal week 2 drop. Even if it doesn't, it has probably already long since broken even, as its reported $45 million budget should place its estimated break-even point somewhere around $112.5 million.
Therefore, in spite of the film's baggage, which includes the worst Rotten Tomatoes score of the franchise (31%) and calls to boycott the movie in the wake of Scream (2022) and Scream VI actor Melissa Barrera being fired from the project after sharing pro-Palestine posts on social media, Scream 7 has most likely hit a high enough theatrical benchmark to get a potential eighth sequel greenlit sooner than later.
