Forget Scott Pilgrim; in July 2016, the world was introduced to Snotgirl by Bryan Lee O'Malley and Leslie Hung. This romance comic came out at the perfect time for me as a new comic book reader. During my college years, I began my comic book journey. While I already had an interest in the likes of DC and Marvel thanks to the films and shows, independent comics were completely new territory for me.

Some of the best indie comics of my college years include Bitch Planet, Lady Killer, Sex Criminals, and - of course - Snotgirl. These titles had a hold on me, making me a lifelong comic fan. Most of my introductory indie comics came to an end years ago, with no more new, physical issues coming out. However, if I could go back in time and tell my college self that almost a decade later she'd still be reading new issues of Snotgirl, she'd be stunned.

This development is thanks to an over four-year hiatus between Snotgirl #15's March 2020 release and #16's December 2024 release. Finally, Snotgirl is back, and the new issues were well worth the wait.

Snotgirl Officially Returns from a Four-Year Hiatus

Snotgirl #15 Opened Up New Doors for Lottie and Caroline

Snotgirl is about Lottie Person, a fashionista and social media star who has no flaws aside from one thing: she has terrible allergies. Lottie sees herself this way, at least. In actuality, Lottie is a horrible friend and a selfish person. All of that changes, though, once Caroline - a mysterious cool girl - enters her life. Lottie is ready to do whatever it takes to impress her; however, that may mean doing a lot of work on herself. She also may have killed someone, but that's just one of the several strange mysteries going on in Lottie's life ever since Caroline showed up.

Image Comics has seen a lot of superheroes and shared universes since its inception, and some of these would make for great TV shows like Invincible.

For fifteen issues, Snotgirl built up to Lottie and Caroline officially getting together. While both women were messy, to say the least, I still wanted them to be together so badly. The tension was palpable, and I could see how Lottie knew she needed to change for this to work. Snotgirl was my sapphic soap opera of a comic, so when the creators finally made Lottie and Caroline official in Snotgirl #15, I wanted even more - but then the hiatus struck.

While Snotgirl #15 ended with the pay-off of Lottie and Caroline being together, I wasn't ready to say goodbye to them. I wanted to see how their relationship would play out, especially since there were so many more secrets about Caroline that had yet to be uncovered. Caroline is surrounded by mysteries, and some are more dangerous than others. While fans like myself got the closure of seeing Caroline and Lottie get together, Snotgirl has plenty more loose ends to explore, and we finally get to explore them four years later in one of Image Comics' best comic series.

Snotgirl Is the Perfect Comic for Shojo Anime Fans

Shojo Fans Have the Perfect Romance Comic

For those who have yet to pick up Snotgirl, do not sleep on this series, especially now that it is back and now that we may hopefully get some answers to the mysteries about Caroline. After 2024 delivered some great shojo anime, Snotgirl is the perfect comic for shojo fans looking for their next binge. It's also a comic book that even deserves its own TV show. If you are a fan of Ai Yazawa's manga like Paradise Kiss, Neighborhood Story, and - especially - Nana, Snotgirl is the comic for you. On top of the drama, romance, and fashion, the series even has mystery.

Snotgirl is the gift that keeps on giving, and it's aged surprisingly well, with its relationship to social media being more poignant in 2025 than in 2016. When Snotgirl #1 first hit shelves, TikTok was not around, and influencer culture was not nearly at the level it is now. Snotgirl highlights how unhealthy Lottie's obsession with popularity, likes, and her online appearance is. It's turned her, as well as her friends, into shallow people who lack genuine connections. Of course, this is not the only reason why they are this way, but it certainly feeds into their behaviors, obsessions, and insecurities.

Snotgirl Continues the Legacy of O'Malley's Scott Pilgrim

A New Series for a New Age

snotgirl issue 16

O'Malley is a master at telling coming-of-age stories for adults who need to get their lives together, whether that be Scott Pilgrim or Lottie Person. While Lottie can be self-centered, delusional, and messy at times, she is still someone readers, like myself, want to root for. I want Lottie to do better, and I want her to find genuine love and connection beyond just her screen.

Meanwhile, Hung delivers a visual masterpiece that speaks to the shojo fan in me, and it is also the perfect non-superhero comic for young adult novel fans. It's like a romantic filter is put over this entire comic, complete with pastels contrasting vibrant colors, longing looks and hyper-expressive eyes, and characters posed for a fashion spread in Vogue. Hung has an eye for fashion, and every page of Snotgirl is a delight, a feeling I cannot get enough of. Thankfully, years after Scott Pilgrim ended, Snotgirl is finally back, and I can get my shojo comic fix once more. Don't make the mistake of not embracing this shojo comic today.

Snotgirl #18 is available February 5th, 2025 from Image Comics.
