Scott Pilgrim Ex, a spiritual sequel to the anime, gets a long-awaited release date

Players can starch punching their way through Toronto this March

Scott Pilgrim Ex, a continuation of Bryan Lee O'Malley's hit comic series, finally has a release date. The game will launch digitally on March 3, an announcement that developer Tribute Games made via a new trailer for the game. The trailer also reveals two new playable characters: One of Ramona Flowers' many evil exes, Matthew Patel, and Robot-01 (who was initially created by two of Ramona's other exes, the Katayanagi Twins, for the purpose of beating up Scott).

Set in a version of Toronto that has been overtaken by a trio of rival gangs, Scott Pilgrim Ex sees Scott, Ramona, and their troupe of friends-slash-frenemies beating up baddies to free the members of local band Sex-Bob-omb. The band's members have been kidnapped and robbed of their instruments, and Toronto has descended into chaos, with residents being "terrorized by demons, vegans, and robots." The trailer suggests that solving Toronto's gang problem will require players to not only travel the city, but also travel through time itself.

Earlier this year, Tribute Games announced Roxie Richter and Lucas Lee as playable characters. In addition to Scott, Ramona, Matthew, Robot-01, Roxie, and Lucas, Scott Pilgrim Ex will also feature one final playable character, who will be revealed sometime before the game's March 3 launch.

"Scott and Ramona [are] set to gain one final ally ahead of Scott Pilgrim Ex’s release," Tribute Games said in a press release announcing the launch date.

The game features a new story co-written by Scott Pilgrim creator Byran Lee O'Malley and Tribute Games, and is described by O'Malley is not really a sequel to the Netflix anime or comics or Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, but a whole new chapter in Scott's story. But much like the anime, the new game isn't pulling any punches when it comes to good tunes. The upcoming beat-'em-up will feature a soundtrack courtesy of Anamanaguchi, the band that created the original game's iconic "chiptune" OST.
