Scandal engulfs Nashville's 'It couple': Ugly backstage whispers about country singer lovers and trash talk about her billionaire dad

Beyond the lovesick lyrics, the country music scene has had its share of real-life epic romances. Johnny and June Cash, George Jones and Tammy Wynette, Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani, Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, et al.

Now it appears two up-and-comers are vying for a spot in the club.

Vincent Mason and Stella Lefty seem intent on becoming country music's newest darlings, but their fast-moving relationship and over-the-top displays of affection have elicited doubt from critics.

'I think strategically they're being smart about it,' one Nashville insider told us.

Less than a year into dating, the little-known duo has already jumped onto red carpets, done interviews and even recorded a duet, with Lefty, 23, previously admitting to writing songs about her 25-year-old beau as soon as they met.

'I wrote [Something to Lose] when I was in Nashville, and this was like the first week that we had really met,' she told countrynow.com in May. 'I was really crushing on him really hard during this week and embarrassingly like wrote every song about him that whole week.'

But it was Mason who made the first move when he messaged Lefty on TikTok, sending a song of hers that he had 'listened to 100 times' on a flight. That led to 12 days of 'hanging out and writing' during her trip to Nashville earlier this year.

And the rest is history. 

The two met in January and by May had made their red carpet debut at the Academy of Country Music Awards where they gushed about each other, saying they are 'always trying to figure out how to be together' with their busy schedules. 

The intensity has been evident to those around the two young artists, who were said to be 'hip to hip' at the Country Music Association Festival in June.

'They're so young, I was almost annoyed at how lovey-dovey they were,' said another well-placed insider.

That was only one month after becoming red-carpet official - and by then they were already meeting the parents.

'Her whole family was at CMA Fest and he was hanging out with her siblings and parents,' an insider said.

But not everyone is convinced of their chemistry.

Reddit forums have been awash with accusations that their relationship is nothing more than a 'showmance' and a 'PR stunt.'

'Feels like a PR thing to me. Industry plant vibes from her, a well-timed relationship with another up and coming artist seems very convenient,' one commenter said, while another echoed: 'I've never really bought into the "industry plant" theories about artists but this one definitely feels like that.'

Although Lefty's new beau was the muse for her viral hit song Boston, the starlet's massive burst of success in recent weeks has left some insiders wondering if being 'nice' will be enough to keep the spark.

'He was the bigger star and now she is exploding,' one industry executive said. 'The drama ahead is will his ego be able to handle the fact that she's now ten times the star that he is in a 90-day period.'

Mason first garnered attention in 2024 after his song Hell is a Dance Floor went viral on TikTok. The Roswell, Georgia, native has since received praise and comparisons to some of the genre's biggest names.

'I would say he's on track to be one of the top five males in the genre,' one source said, while another industry expert deemed him 'the next Tucker Wetmore.'

Despite still being a relative rookie, Mason received an ACM Awards nomination for New Male Artist this year, embarked on his first stadium tour when opening for singer Morgan Wallen, and has more than seven million monthly listeners on Spotify alone.

His multi-year climb, however, has nothing on Lefty. 

Just a few months ago, Lefty - who got her break on social media, where she posted videos of herself singing - had less than 80,000 followers on Instagram and is now inching toward 400,000.

'He needs her probably more than she needs him,' one source said.

Hailing from Chicago and living in Los Angeles would normally be a non-starter for traditional country fans, but Lefty made quite an impression at her first CMA Fest in Nashville. She played multiple shows that reached capacity, singing with superstar duo Dan + Shay and pushing Spotify streams to almost 100 million for her biggest hit.

While her EP Is This Heaven? debuted at No 9 on Billboard's Top Country Albums chart - its anchor song Boston has spent multiple weeks on the Country Airplay chart - some of the genre's insiders and fans question her longevity. As such, Lefty has been unable to shake the 'nepo baby' slurs and 'industry plant' claims.

Lefty's father is reported billionaire Eric Lefkofsky, who made his fortune as the co-founder and CEO of the deals site Groupon. He is currently the CEO and founder of AI healthcare startup Tempus with an estimated $6 billion net worth.

Her family's wealth has left some in Nashville split on her early success, particularly in an industry where virality is king, and good marketing budgets can tip a song over the edge.

'The advantage she has that other artists don't is that she and her team can put hundreds of thousands of dollars toward marketing because of her early success,' one source said. 'It could be the marketing that got her that exposure or it's just a really catchy song.'

Another said: 'We'd have to be stupid not to think money played a role in this. It would be dumb for us to believe that didn't help. She's also had the freedom to make fun, free music because she's not a starving artist working down on Broadway.'

Though not everyone is convinced money alone could garner such success. 

One Nashville country music executive said, 'Certainly, Stella comes from a position of privilege so it's easier for her when she doesn't have to wait tables but is that going to be the reason she's successful? No. She has great music.' 

Lefty now has to fight off the trifecta of narratives, including the typical genre argument of what constitutes country music.

'If it weren't for her collaborating with Vincent, I wouldn't think she has anything to do with country music. I thought their pairing was weird. I wouldn't have put them together musically,' another source said.

But others jumped to her defense.

'I would be more concerned for her for the criticism,' said an insider. 'Dating Vincent gives them one more thing to say about her. People can't accept that the music is good and she's talented.'

And the relationship?

'It seems like there's no drama,' a Nashville insider exclusively told the Daily Mail. 'It's a refreshing relationship instead of a denial of rumors. This is really happening and they really like each other.'
