Today's Savannah Guthrie Speaks Out After Her Mom Goes Missing in Arizona

Authorities sharing insight into their investigation into the disappearance of Nancy Guthrie.

Just one day after the mother of Today anchor Savannah Guthrie was reported missing in her hometown of Tucson, Arizona, local sheriff Chris Nanos shared an update on the condition of Nancy’s house when authorities arrived at the scene.

“We believe now, after we processed that crime scene, that we do, in fact have a crime scene,” he shared during a Feb. 2 press conference. “We're asking the community's help. This community has always stepped up to help us solve some pretty tough crimes. I'm looking for that again.”

He added of Nancy’s known health condition, prior to her disappearance, “This is an 84-year-old lady who suffers from some physical ailments, has some physical challenges, is in need of medication—medication that if she doesn't have in 24 hours, it could be fatal.”

Later in the conference, the Sheriff shared insight into how authorities determined they were in fact looking at a crime scene, with him citing Nancy’s limited mobility.

“We know she didn't just walk out of there, that we know,” he said, adding, “There are other things at the site, at the scene, that indicate there was a—she did not leave on our own.”

In addition to concerns over Nancy’s medication, Sheriff Nanos—who emphasized in an earlier update that the octogenarian is of sound mind—expressed worry that she may have been exposed to the natural elements.

Savannah, meanwhile, was absent from Today earlier that morning, though the 54-year-old—who has two siblings, Annie Guthrie and Camron Guthrie—did share some words with the morning show.

"On behalf of our family, I want to thank everyone for the thoughts, prayers and messages of support," she said in her statement. "Right now, our focus remains on the safe return of our dear Nancy."

"We thank law enforcement for their hard work on this case," Savannah added, "and encourage anyone with information to contact the Pima County Sheriff's Department."

Following the news of Nancy’s disappearance, Savannah’s Today family, including Jenna Bush Hager and Sheinelle Jones, shared their support.

“We love Nancy, I know her personally,” Jenna said Feb. 2 on Today with Jenna & Sheinelle, during which she reiterated how vital it is that Nancy gets her medicine soon. “We are thinking of our dearest, dearest Savannah and her whole family right now. Our prayers obviously go out to Savannah and the entire family.”
