Excitement over Raimi’s horror return gave box office fuel to the outrageously bloody and wickedly satirical thriller Send Help, which is now ready to hit streaming on Hulu, with a premiere date set for May 7. The movie made $94 million in its theatrical run, on a budget of $40 million.
The supernatural is not in play this time around for the director of the decidedly otherworldly Evil Dead movies, but that doesn’t mean Raimi has dialed back on the gore. Plenty of bloody mayhem is to be found in Send Help, as stars Dylan O’Brien and Rachel McAdams engage in an escalating survival battle after becoming stranded on a desert island.
Critics were nearly as over-the-moon about Raimi’s horror renaissance as audiences, vaulting his blood-soaked, hilarious new movie to a 93% Rotten Tomatoes score, to go with an 87% Popcornmeter score. Reviews praised the performances of the two leads, whose survival story turns into a deliciously nasty battle of wits, while giving high marks to the film’s script.
ScreenRant echoed these sentiments in its own Send Help review, saying of Raimi’s film, “A true rarity, Send Help feels fresh and unique — so much, in fact, it’s hard to decide whether you want Raimi (or anybody else, for that matter) to make more movies like it, or let it alone, thriving on a far-off island where no one can compromise its singular, idiosyncratic perfection.”
Known for his love of gross-out effects, Raimi discussed Send Help’s high ick factor in an interview with ScreenRant back in February. “There was the usual. Blood, vomit, snot,” the director ticked off. “The kids love it,” he added. “And it’s hard for me to stop.”
A strong stomach will be required as streaming audiences get a taste of Raimi's latest horrifying concoction when it finally premieres on Hulu.
