EXCLUSIVE: Sally Hawkins, David Haig, Victor Garber, Max Casella and Isaac Bae are set to join Ryan Reynolds and newcomer Mae Schenk in a live-action feature adaptation of Eloise, with Netflix recently boarding the project to distribute. Amy Sherman-Palladino is directing from a script she co-wrote with Hannah Marks and Linda Woolverton.
Reynolds will produce through his Maximum Effort banner along with George Dewey, Ashley Fox and Johnny Pariseau. Woolverton will also produce with Molly Milstein exec producing for Maximum Effort.
The family film’s logline is currently under wraps but will be a wholly original adventure based on the beloved children’s book series written by Kay Thompson and illustrated by Hilary Knight. Schenk will play the titular character, with Reynolds playing new original villain.
Independent film and TV studio MRC acquired rights to Eloise in 2019 and is overseeing production of the movie. Handmade Films will work in conjunction with MRC on the production.
MRC will collaborate with the Thompson estate, illustrator Knight, as well as Simon & Schuster, the book series’ publisher, on the film. Principal photography is set to start in November.
Garber is repped by Amplified, Paradigm and attorney Oscar Abrams; Bae is represented by The Osbrink Agency, McLain Entertainment and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman, Smelkinson & Christopher; and Casella is repped by Ellipsis Entertainment Group and Innovative Artists.
