Sabrina Carpenter has revealed she has to 'tiptoe' through her life due to fears trolls will brand her a 'terrible person', as she reflected on her huge rise to fame in the social media age.

The singer, 25, sent fans into a frenzy by releasing her new album Short n' Sweet on Friday, and in a new interview, said that she struggles to be her 'authentic' self when she's having a bad day.

Sabrina told The Guardian: 'When I was a kid, I just wanted to sing on stage and, in that, I hoped to make people happy.

'And then you realise, especially with the internet: if I'm having a bad day, or didn't get enough sleep, or haven't had any coffee, and I say something and the tone comes off a little snarky, there's a million people waiting to call you a terrible person.

'You've got to tiptoe around the edge of being authentic and protecting yourself, which is a bit of a mindf***.'

Sabrina went onto insist growing up and shooting to fame in the age of social media has been difficult but she'd determined not to let it affect the way she writes her music.

She added: 'It's not what I signed up for, but I can't really help when I was born. I want to be honest – I want to just write about what's happening in my life as a 25-year-old girl. But it comes with the territory and I just have to be like… OK!'

Sabrina released her sixth studio album on Friday to the delight of fans, following reports last week that she had dumped her boyfriend, Saltburn star Barry Keoghan.

It was claimed that Sabrina had dumped Barry almost three weeks ago due to the Irish star's wild partying and him acting an 'idiot' when intoxicated.

But now according to PEOPLE their relationship is 'on and off' after the Espresso hitmaker leaving their relationship undefined in an interview earlier this year.

When asked by Rolling Stone if she refers to Barry as her boyfriend she said: 'How do I skirt around this question?'.

'The [dating] pool is the pool, and when you meet people that feel authentic and are so brilliant and amazing in every way, that's what you do. Obviously, I write songs about exactly how I feel, so I guess I can't be so surprised that people are interested in who and what those songs are about.'

She concluded: 'That's something that comes with the territory.'

It comes after a source told The Sun about their supposed split: 'Barry acts like an idiot when he is drunk and Sabrina was getting increasingly frustrated'.

'He has always been a party animal and Sabrina was fed up with his antics. She is soaring in the charts and is putting herself first as she gears up for her tour next month.'

MailOnline have contacted Barry and Sabrina's reps for comment.

Barry appeared to shut down rumours of the split as he showed support for Sabrina on social media on Friday.

Fans had been left heartbroken on Friday after celebrity gossip DeuxMoi shared a tip saying the duo had parted ways.

Taking to her Instagram, anonymous 'Gossip Girl' DeuxMoi shared a message sent to her on her Instagram, which read: 'Sabrina and Barry broke up.'

But just two hours later Barry quashed concerns after liking a post of the Espresso singer in lingerie.

Sabrina took to her Instagram to share the racy snap as part of promotion for her album Short n' Sweet.

It comes after it was reported that Sabrina's romance with Barry Keoghan is 'off and on' after it was claimed she'd dumped him

Saltburn star Barry was among the whopping 1.6million fans to like the stunning snap - in which she donned a pair of tiny pale blue briefs and a garter.

In June Sabrina declared she was in 'in love for the first time' amid her romance with the Oscar nominee.

Speaking to Vanity Fair she discussed her songwriting process and explained how 'idol' Taylor Swift taught her to let an audience interpret the meanings to her songs: 'I try to not tell people what a song is explicitly about'.

'People don't always know what's going on inside the minds of anyone, let alone a young girl who's navigating love and a lot of things for the first time'.

The singer–songwriter cleared up speculation from fans who suggested that her upcoming album Short N' Sweet might feature lyrics inspired by the actor in a recent chat with Variety.

She also opened up about what it was like for the Oscar nominee to take a starring role in her Please Please Please music video.

The Espresso singer may have disappointed some fans hoping for a bigger peek into her relationship when she admitted that she tries to steer clear of topical material for her lyrics.

'It feels easier to write about things that happened in the past, or that haven't happened yet,' she said.

Although she can get more clarity with enough distance, the delayed songwriting process seems to have caused some concerns in the studio.

'My producers tell me I'm beating a dead horse because I'll write a song three years after I last spoke to the person who inspired the lyric,' Sabrina admitted.

Despite her claims to focus on things in the rearview mirror, Sabrina notably had her actor boyfriend star in her music video for Please Please Please, which includes lyrics about a boyfriend who is an actor.

Sabrina and Barry's relationship is now said to be 'on and off' following reports the pair had split for good after Sabrina had grown frustrated with the actor's behaviour

According to her, Barry was totally on board for the music video shoot, as he was already a fan of the tune.

'He loved the song. He's obsessed with the lyrics, and I'm so grateful for that,' Sabrina gushed.

She also took a moment to sing Barry's praises in the wake of multiple acclaimed films, including The Banshees Of Inisherin, which earned him an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actor.

'I don't want to sound biased, but I think he's one of the best actors of this generation,' the songstress said. 'So getting to see him on the screen with my song as the soundtrack made the video better and all the more special.'

Prior to his romance with Sabrina, Barry was in a two-year relationship with the dental nurse Alyson Kierans, with whom he shares his son Brando, who was born in August 2022, while Barry was filming Saltburn.
