Kate Hudson stars in the Netflix sports comedy series as Isla Gordon, who becomes the president of the Los Angeles Waves, a professional basketball team owned by her family. With an overall critics' score of 84% and an audience score of 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, Running Point's reviews have generally been positive, and the show was renewed for a third season earlier this year.
While speaking with TVLine, Running Point co-creator, writer, and executive producer Mindy Kaling revealed that season 3 will be set during the three months of pro basketball's off-season. She teased that the season will include the draft in Las Vegas, trades between teams, and exploring what the Los Angeles Waves' players are doing during this time of year. For most basketball teams, those three months are when the teams are kind of built, and it’s incredibly interesting. It includes the draft in Vegas, and all kinds of trades that happen, and what the players are doing when they’re not playing basketball. Are they playing overseas? Are they working on their other businesses? Diving into that world will be really fun about this next season.
For a series that revolves around professional basketball, setting an entire season during the sport's off-season may initially seem like a strange choice, but it aligns with the existing exploration of Isla, her family, and the team's players off the court. With the draft, trades, and players potentially playing overseas, there will still be plenty of focus on basketball, while also diving deeper into the characters' personal lives. This approach also pushes season 3 to build on the show's success rather than simply repeat what has already been done.
While Isla is the protagonist and the face of the show, Running Point's cast of characters also features Brenda Song as Ali Lee, Drew Tarver as Sandy Gordon, Scott MacArthur as Ness Gordon, Justin Theroux as Cam Gordon, Fabrizio Guido as Jackie Moreno, Chet Hanks as Travis Bugg, Toby Sandeman as Marcus Winfield, Uche Agada as Dyson Gibbs, and Ray Romano as Coach Norm Stinson. Travis, Marcus, and Dyson are among the Waves players whose lives off the court are poised to receive further attention in season 3.
In ScreenRant's Running Point season 2 review, Cher Thompson gave it a rating of six out of 10 stars and praised Hudson's performance for elevating the show amid some flaws: "The series is anchored by Hudson's performance, which could (and does) carry a level of charm that lends authenticity to Running Point's most formulaic moments." On Rotten Tomatoes, season 2 was overall better-received, though, culminating in a 90% critics' score as opposed to 79% for season 1. With 81% for season 1 and 79% for season 2, the audience scores were almost the exact same.
As for season 3, there has been no announcement of filming having started yet, although it is expected to begin in the fall. Season 1 premiered in February 2025, season 2 debuted in April 2026, and the latter's renewal was confirmed only a few weeks later in May. While there is no set window or date yet for season 3, a 2027 release seems likely based on the trajectory of the past seasons and how quickly the upcoming one was renewed.
Kaling co-created Running Point alongside Ike Barinholtz, Elaine Ko, and David Stassen, the last of whom serves as the showrunner. In addition to her starring role, Hudson is an executive producer alongside Jeanie Buss, who is a real-life minority owner of the Los Angeles Lakers.
