She posted a Reel on Instagram on February 16 with the caption "The todo list is never ending. I need a nap and a duvet day asap. 🌀" In the post, Rumer is standing, surrounded by a list of everything she tries to cram into each day as a single mom.
Most of the replies are positive, although several comments assume details about her financial situation. In response to these assumptions, Willis posted an Instagram story, calling out the replies.
"Just had to clarify since it seems there are quite a few uninformed and rude in my comments to this post," Willis wrote. "I work 4 different jobs to provide for my daughter. I am the sole provider for her. I don't live off a trust fund or get money from my parents."
The post concludes, "Most of the time I don't have help with her. So how about y'all pause before you judge and assume."
Several hours later, Willis posted an extended message in her Instagram Stories, saying, "I want to respond to this with care because I think there's a misunderstanding about what I was actually saying."
In the post, Willis responds to a comment saying her family would never allow her to fall into serious debt and that she has a safety net others don't. "I am very aware that I have privileges in my life that many people don't. And I don't take that for granted," she replied.
Willis states that she knows there are realities she will never experience, but insists the post was never about that in the first place. "There were years where I was the sole provider for multiple people, navigating pregnancy, inconsistent work, and the uncertainty that comes with that," she wrote. "So the idea that I don't work or don't understand financial pressure isn't accurate."
Rumer wrote that she believes people can hold two truths at once, noting "none of our experiences exist in a vacuum." Willis concludes that she meant her post to foster common ground rather than erase differences. "I think there's room for both compassion for what others face and honesty about our own lives without it becoming a competition," she added.
