Australian actress Ruby Rose has landed a major role in a grisly new Hollywood murder mystery called The Drowning Pool.

No details have emerged about what character the 38-year-old will play in the thriller, which will be directed by David Hackl.

Set in the Canary Islands, the plot deals with a woman who investigates the disappearance of her sister after her sibling is reported to have drowned.

The woman, called Katherine, uncovers a series of 'mysterious' disappearances involving other women in the waters around the islands.

The official synopsis explains that eventually Katherine uncovers a gruesome tale of 'ritualistic evil'.

Preparations for filming the chiller on location in the Canary Islands are already underway, reported Deadline on Wednesday.

The director is Canadian filmmaker David who made Saw V (2018) which is part of the infamously bloodthirsty horror franchise.

It comes after Ruby recently returned to the limelight after her controversial exit from the Batwoman series in 2020.

The Melbourne native, whose real name is Ruby Rose Langenheim, began her showbiz career as a model, DJ and TV presenter for MTV Australia.

As her popularity grew, she found herself fronting major modelling campaigns for big names including Maybelline, and co-hosting popular shows such as Channel 10's The Project and Australia's Next Top Model.

She moved to Hollywood in 2013 to pursue acting and then shot to fame in 2015 with her breakout role in the Netflix series Orange Is the New Black.

The gender-fluid star's acting career skyrocketed when she was cast in blockbuster movies such as Resident Evil: The Final Chapter (2016) and Pitch Perfect 3 (2017).

She starred alongside Hollywood fan favourite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) and Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017).

In 2018, Ruby also co-starred with Jason Statham in sci-fi thriller The Meg.

However, her career took a turn for the worse in 2020 when she controversially quit CW superhero series Batwoman after just one season.

The star claimed she was subjected to poor working conditions on the set of the superhero series.

'To my dear, dear fans still asking if I will return to that awful show, I wouldn't return for any amount of money nor if a gun were to my head… NOR DID I QUIT,' she wrote in a scathing online post.

'I DID NOT QUIT, they ruined Kate Kane and they destroyed Batwoman, not me.'

She has since appeared in the films Stowaway, Vanquish, 1UP and Taurus over 2021 and 2022.

She also appeared in U.S. action film The Collective in 2023 and Middle East set war film Dirty Angels.

She starred alongside Hollywood fan favourite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage (2017) and Keanu Reeves in John Wick: Chapter 2 (2017)

Ruby is also writing a tell-all memoir which will include details on her feud with The Veronicas' Lisa and Jessica Origliasso.

The star dated Jess from 2016 to 2018, during which time the sisters' relationship became so strained they were on the verge of estrangement.

Ruby announced on Instagram last year that she had started writing her book, and promised to expose the pop twins - whom she did not name but called 'the sisters' - for 'how horrific' they allegedly were to her.

It comes after Ruby recently returned to the limelight after her controversial exit from the CW Batwoman series in 2020

She also claimed the 'truth' she was writing would 'p**s a lot of people off'.

Speaking on The Kyle and Jackie O Show a few months after the split, Jessica said she was in 'a very complex relationship'.

She added: 'I'm still trying to come to terms with the reality of it every day so it's really hard to explain to anybody.

'There was just so much that happened, so much that I can't even get into it.'
