Iconic X-Men hero Rogue just underwent an unbelievable redesign - her most drastic since 1991 gave the Southern Belle her definitive costume. Not only that, but the reinvented Rogue has an incredibly dark new superpower.
In 1991, Jim Lee made history with X-Men #1 - still Marvel's best-selling single issue of all time (read our retro review of the issue here.) Along with a compelling story, Lee served up new costumes for heroes including Rogue, Wolverine and Cyclops, giving many of the X-Men what are considered their defining costumes to this day.
Lee gave Rogue her yellow and green costume, jacket and bandana, redefining the character forever. Rogue has had some great redesigns since, but none that could stand alone as their own separate character...
Meet Rambit, X-Men's New Fusion of Rogue and Gambit
In the recent Jeff the Land Shark: Superstar #1 - from Kelly Thompson, Tokitokoro, Jim Campbell and Joe Caramagna - Marvel fans are introduced to Rambit, a combined version of iconic X-Men Rogue and Gambit.
The story sees the supervillain Mojo attempting to assemble a superteam who will attract ratings in his bizarre realm of Mojoworld. Mojo knows he wants Jeff the Land Shark as a cute mascot, but is fielding pitches for other members. After dismissing team made up of Wolverine and Spider-Man variants, he accepts a team of combined X-Men/Avengers heroes who he dubs 'The Jeff Coast Avengers.'

There's just one problem: Mojo doesn't have the real Jeff to round out his team, kicking off the events of the comic as Jeff is kidnapped to join this parodic Avengers roster, which seems to poke fun at Marvel's habit of creating new characters out of popular heroes (see the recent debut of Hellverine.) However, as funny as some of these characters are, it's clear they're going to be around for a while.
Rambit is shown wearing a version of Rogue's green and yellow costume, as well as a bulky coat and face mask - seemingly to prevent his powers from affecting those around him. He also has Rogue's white hair and Gambit's red eyes, though for Rambit they appear to be pink (at least in Rickie Yagawa's variant cover for Uncanny X-Men #31.)
Rambit Has One of X-Men's Darkest Powers
As a combination of Rogue and Gambit, Rambit truly got the very worst of their powers - "everything his skin touches explodes! Woo!" This is a combo of Gambit's ability to charge inanimate objects with kinetic force, and Rogue's ability to siphon the memories, lifeforce and powers of whoever she touches.
So far, it's unclear whether Rambit's powers are always fatal, but if they scale in the same way as Gambit's do with mass, he could end up being this wild Avengers roster's surprise heavy hitter. Hopefully, if he sticks around, he'll develop the same control over his powers as his inspiration.
Marvel has combined Rogue and Gambit into one character, debuting Rambit as part of the new Jeff Coast Avengers. As with any new addition, don't be surprised to see this character running around X-Men comics sometime soon if fan response is positive, following the same path to stardom as Jeff's former owner Gwenpool.
