Initially introduced as a villain, Rogue has since become a pivotal hero for the X-Men franchise, with Uncanny X-Men writer Gail Simone calling her "one of the best pure visual creations in Marvel history."
Now, as the X-Men play a high-stakes game of Dungeons & Dragons, Rogue gets a redesign that revamps her iconic outfit for the occasion.
Rogue Debuts New Fantasy-Inspired Costume
In the recent X-Men United #4 - from Eve L. Ewing, Tiago Palma, Brian Reber and Joe Sabino - the X-Men engage in a D&D-esque game as a team-building exercise, following tensions about their new school Graymatter Lane. The team are sucked into a Sword and Sorcery realm of Iceman's design, made real thanks to the reality-warping powers of new mutant Ben Liu.
Appearing in the realm, Rogue becomes a Barbarian-like hero, with a green and white costume suited to the fantasy setting. Alongside shoulder armor, fur boots and a torn neckerchief, Rogue finds herself wielding a gigantic axe. The relative lack of complexity to the costume is likely to make it approachable for cosplayers of every skill level.
Unlike Cyclops and Emma Frost who are irritated to be in the fantasy world, Rogue leans into the theme, bantering with a fantasy merchant while the others discuss their quest. Of course, the issue ends with the team trapped in the new fantasy world, their playful quest now having life or death consequences.
Rogue's Savage Land Costume Finally Has Competition
Thanks to its skimpy design and heavy theming, Rogue's new fantasy costume can't help but be compared to her iconic '90s Savage Land costume. The look came from a story where Rogue was stranded in the dinosaur-infested jungle with a torn costume, makeshift bandana and giant spear.
While the costume (designed by Jim Lee) only occurred once in-world, it instantly became iconic to fans, and has appeared on countless variant covers since. Marvel even published a Rogue: The Savage Land miniseries in 2025, revealing her 'untold adventures' in the costume, which is among Marvel's most cosplayed looks of all time.
The Savage Land costume has become a subject of debate, with some arguing that continually objectifying Rogue does the character a disservice. However, from the new fantasy costume, it's clear Marvel is hoping to recreate the outfit's popularity.
Rogue's Last Costume Change Was One of Her Best Ever
While Rogue's new fantasy outfit is cool - primarily because it references her powerhouse status by making her the group's main melee fighter - it doesn't quite rise to the heights of her recent Rogue Red redesign.
Debuting in the Rogue Storm series from Murewa Ayodele and Roland Boschi, the costume was worn by a new version of Rogue who split off from the original due to a cosmic accident. This Rogue has no mutant powers, but wields unbreakable Vibranium knuckledusters and commands her own X-Force roster.
The costume is cool, but the concept was the real selling of this redesign, giving fans twice as much Rogue while also setting up angst-riddled interpersonal drama as Gambit was forced to choose between the two versions of his love. Rogue Red was introduced as part of the alt-future of the Age of Revelation event, but it definitely felt like Marvel was trialing the idea to take fans' temperature, so hopefully 'Rogue Red' finds her way into mainstream lore sometime soon.
Since the beginning of the 'From the Ashes' era of X-Men comics in 2024, Rogue has become one of the main pillars of the franchise, equal only to Scott Summers' Cyclops. As a result, Rogue is seeing some major pagetime (including her own solo series), which in X-Men comics ensures a slew of new costumes for cosplay fans to try out.
