Warning: Contains spoilers for Uncanny X-Men #7!!
In Rogue's tenure with the X-Men, she has witnessed the highs and lows of the teams. The X-Men were built around the idea of Charles Xavier's dream, and the mutant leader offered Rogue a home and purpose for years, but one of the founding X-Men has done even more to earn her respect: Cyclops. They may not totally agree about the X-Men's future, but her respect for Scott remains solid.
The preview for Uncanny X-Men #7 – written by Gail Simone, with art by David Marquez – features an unproductive phone call between Rogue and Cyclops concerning the upcoming raid on Greymalkin Prison. Cyclops orders Rogue to stand down, as he tries to avoid an all-out war, but tensions rise enough for Scott to question whether she's angry with him.
Following the fall of Krakoa, and Xavier'fall from grace, Rogue is trying to hold onto what the X-Men mean to her. While that currently puts her at odds with Cyclops, she admits there's no one she respects more, "not even Charles."
Cyclops Has Earned More Of Rogue's Respect Than The X-Men's Founder, Professor X
Uncanny X-Men #7 by Gail Simone, David Marquez, Edgar Salazar, Matthew Wilson, and Clayton Cowles
The X-Men wouldn't exist without Charles Xavier, but Krakoa's final days brought out the worst of the mutant leader. Not only did he cast aside his dream and endanger mutant lives, but his actions left them feeling even more lost and disillusioned after the nation and culture they built were taken from them. Many of them, like Cyclops and Rogue, dedicated their lives to upholding the cause he instilled in them. Rogue knows firsthand what Scott Summers has endured and sacrificed for the sake of mutantkind. He's their most dedicated soldier and always finds a way to keep going.
If mutantkind is ever in need, they know they can look to Scott Summers for leadership. Rogue knows the same.
Cyclops' dedication to the X-Men has put him at odds with plenty of other mutants over the years, as there's always someone who disagrees with his approach to leadership. Yet he never wavers in light of those disagreements, and if mutantkind is ever in need, they know they can look to Scott Summers for leadership. Rogue knows the same. While she fought in Captain America's Unity Force to avenge Krakoa, Cyclops was captured, tortured, and nearly executed by Orchis. She's seen what he's willing to endure on their people's behalf, and that undercurrent will always run through their friendship.
Rogue's Respect For Cyclops Won't Prevent Them From Coming Into Conflict Over Mutantkind's Future
A Widening Divide
Though Rogue holds Scott in higher esteem than Charles Xavier, that won't convince her to take orders from him every time. Rogue leads with heart, intent on giving her team a feeling of home and safety, while Cyclops takes a far more tactical stance with his X-Men. The raid on Greymalkin Prison will be the first of possibly many conflicts, and their relationship won't convince Rogue to fully hand over the reigns when kids in her care are involved. Rogue respects Cyclops more than any X-Men member, but respect won't get her to back down when her team is in danger.
Uncanny X-Men #7 will be available December 11, 2024 from Marvel Comics.
