EXCLUSIVE: Rob Lowe is the latest to fall in love with the Stephen Merchant directed and starring, and Cameron Diaz headlining romantic comedy at Amazon MGM Studios.
The West Wing Primetime Emmy nominee joins a booming lineup that includes Jake Lacy, Josh Segarra, Sherry Cola, Judith Light, Myra Lucretia Taylor, Fabrizio Guido, Lisa Gilroy, and Dustin Ybarra.
Merchant co-wrote the script with John Butler which follows a workaholic Brit who is employed at an upscale New York hotel (Merchant). He needs a wife for appearances. In comes a struggling stand-up comedienne who is desperate for health insurance (Diaz). Their fake marriage starts as a transaction – but ends in an unexpected romance. As we first told you, the movie is produced by Lee Eisenberg, Merchant, and Point Grey Pictures’ Seth Rogen, Evan Goldberg, James Weaver, and Josh Fagen. Natalie Sandy will executive produce.
Lowe counts two Emmy noms, six Golden Globes, and four Screen Actors Guild Awards, winning two. His canon includes St. Elmo’s Fire, About Last Night, and The Outsiders, as well as Parks and Recreation. He also starred in Behind the Candelabra, Austin Powers, and Tommy Boy. His two memoirs, Stories I Only Tell My Friends and Love Life, were both New York Times Best Sellers. Lowe turned his first memoir into a touring show called Stories I Only Tell My Friends: Live! Most recently, Rob Lowe in and produced Fox’s 9-1-1 Texas-set spinoff, 9-1-1: Lone Star, and currently hosts and produces the #1 game show on television, Fox’s The Floor. His Netflix comedy Unstable, from Victor Fresco and starring alongside his son, John Owen Lowe, was inspired by their social media relationship where John Owen often hilariously trolled his dad. Next up, Lowe will star in Bleecker Street’s The Third Parent alongside Crispin Glover. The actor is repped by WME, Brillstein, and Latham & Watkins.
