Riot Games unveils first-ever Tier 2 World Championship in Korea

Riot Games is giving its farm system a proper stage. The company has announced the World Stars Challengers Invitational, the first-ever Tier 2 World Championship for League of Legends, set to take place in Korea with 16 teams competing.

What the Invitational actually is

The World Stars Challengers Invitational represents Riot’s most ambitious investment yet in the layer of competition that sits beneath its marquee leagues like the LCK, LEC, and LCS. Sixteen teams will compete, making it larger than the Asia Star Challengers Invitational held in September 2024, which featured 12 teams and focused on regional talent from the Asian competitive scene.

Riot hasn’t disclosed specifics on prize pools, exact dates, or the tournament format. What it has made clear is the intent: create a global showcase for emerging talent that exists outside the Tier 1 World Championship pipeline.

Why Tier 2 matters more than you think

The company’s Global Head of League Esports has publicly acknowledged concerns about the viability of Tier 2 competition, noting gaps in how these leagues and tournaments are currently organized and supported.

Tier 1 franchised leagues offer stable salaries, media exposure, and a clear competitive calendar. Tier 2 teams, by contrast, have historically operated with minimal financial backing, inconsistent tournament schedules, and almost no international play.

Building a global Tier 2 hub

The Asia Star Challengers Invitational served as a proof of concept. That September 2024 event demonstrated there was both competitive appetite and fan interest in watching developmental teams compete internationally. Expanding from 12 teams to 16, and from a regional to a global scope, is the logical next step.

Internal discussions about reforming Tier 2 structures have been ongoing, with the company aiming to create what amounts to a global Tier 2 hub for esports competition.
