CES is one of the biggest stages in the smart home industry, and Ring is one of the big brands making announcements during the event. The Amazon-owned home security company has announced it is upgrading two of its popular cameras to 2K video resolution and forming a new partnership with Kidde to integrate Ring technology into smart smoke and combination alarms.
New Kidde collection with Ring
Kidde is launching a new collection of smart smoke and combination detectors featuring Ring technology. When the alarms detect harmful levels of smoke or carbon monoxide (CO), consumers will receive a notification through the Ring app on their mobile devices. Existing Kidde users who add one of these new alarms to their homes can also integrate eligible hardwired alarms with the Ring app for real-time alerts.

"Home fires today burn hotter and faster, causing more damage than ever before. In an emergency, every second counts, and with Kidde, we're enabling customers to act fast," Liz Hamren, Ring CEO, said in the announcement. "Kidde's enhanced sensing technology offers 25 percent faster and up to three times more precise smoke detection, and the alarms' advanced technology reduces false alarms -- often caused by cooking. When a customer adds one of these new alarms to their home, they can also receive real-time alarm alerts via the Ring app from other eligible hardwired Kidde alarms in their home."
Almost as impressive, Ring is also giving customers with one of the new Kidde detectors about a week's notice via the app when a smoke or combination alarm has a low battery. This feature aims to minimize the annoying chirping from low batteries and the ensuing guessing game to find the culprit.
Floodlight Cam Pro and Spotlight Cam Pro update
From safety to home security, Ring also announced it is upgrading two of its cameras -- the Floodlight Cam Pro and Spotlight Cam Pro -- to 2K resolution from the current 1080p. This means customers with these cameras will be able to upgrade their resolution through an over-the-air update at no extra cost.
"We know video quality is important to customers, and at the heart of all Ring's image quality is Ring Vision," Hamren said of the upgrade. "Ring Vision combines software, hardware, and Ring's internal expertise to ensure balanced color, contrast, and motion smoothing so customers see each moment in brilliant detail."

The firmware update to give these cameras 2K resolution will begin rolling out on Jan. 8.
Ring is launching a new optional 24/7 smoke and carbon monoxide monitoring service for $5 a month with the new Kidde smoke and combination alarm integration. When one of these subscribers' alarms goes off, an agent will request emergency help and alert emergency contacts. The service will begin on April 2 and will work with the new Kidde alarms and Ring's Alarm Smoke & CO Listener.
The new Kidde smart smoke and combination alarms with Ring technology will go on sale in April, exclusively at The Home Depot.
