Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe’s epic fantasy movie sprints to HBO Max’s top 10 charts.

The creative duo launched their partnership with the Oscar-winning historical epic, Gladiator, which ultimately won major awards, like Best Picture and Best Actor for Crowe’s mighty performance as Maximus. Afterward, Crowe and Scott continued their collaboration during the 2000s, leading to four additional movies, including Body of Lies and American Gangster.

However, their last collaboration dates to 2010 when they made the action-adventure epic Robin Hood, in which Crowe portrays the titular legendary outlaw. Although the adaptation was a box office disappointment, it has quickly become a streaming hit on HBO Max.

Robin Hood is currently ranked at no. 7 on HBO Max’s top 10 movies in the United States, just ahead of MacGruber and The Notebook. The streaming chart is topped by Rose Bryne’s If I Had Legs I Would Kick You, followed by The Smashing Machine, The Alabama Solution, Masterminds, and I’m Chevy Chase and You’re Not.

The fantasy epic’s streaming success comes nearly 16 years after its release, when the film had a disappointing box office. It made just a total of $321.7 million against a reported $155–237 million. In addition, Robin Hood received mixed reviews with a 43% score on Rotten Tomatoes, and audience reception was a little better at 58%.

Critics found that the adaptation was too serious as an origin story and removed the fun elements associated with the legend. Despite the criticism, however, Crowe and Scott’s Robin Hood has occasionally seen a pique of interest when it’s on streaming.

The streaming success of Robin Hood is coincidental, as stories about the legendary outlaw have become prominent. This includes MGM+’s TV show starring Sean Bean and Jack Patten, as the series was released in late 2025. In addition, a much darker story of Robin Hood will be released by A24, The Death of Robin Hood. The upcoming film stars Hugh Jackman in the titular role, who is haunted by his life of crime.

There have been several depictions of the iconic vigilante, including Kevin Costner and Cary Elwes. While most Robin Hood adaptations have missed the mark, including Crowe’s version, it’s clear that the legendary folklore is very popular and relevant today. Now, the 2010 version is seeing that resurgence via streaming, giving new life to Crowe and Scott’s iteration.
