David and a Xenomorph from Alien Covenant.

Gladiator 2 and Alien director Ridley Scott reveals that he has an idea for an Alien: Covenant sequel. Scott has confirmed to be working on a new Alien movie and hinted that he wanted to reinvent earlier installments in the franchise, namely Covenant or Prometheus. The latest installment, Alien: Romulus, which sees space colonizers confronting the worst kinds of aliens, is the highest-grossing horror movie this year.

When asked whether the next movie would be a Covenant or Romulus sequel, Scott tells The Hollywood Reporter that he already had an idea. The director admitted that Covenant's ending provides the "perfect beginning" for a sequel because "it leaves the girl" in the cryo pod and the killer android David with alien eggs and "2,000 colonists hanging around." Check out what he said:

Covenant is the best one [for a sequel] because it leaves the girl in the [cryo pod] and [Michael Fassbender’s killer android] David has alien eggs and 2,000 colonists hanging around. It’s a perfect beginning.

Alien: Covenant Sequel Might Happen

2017's Alien: Covenant wasn't a big hit in the franchise. It grossed a humble $240 million at the global box office. Despite its disappointing box office performance, the film's ending is the perfect setting for a sequel. The director is currently brainstorming about the next Alien movie, and it sounds like a sequel to Alien: Covenant could be in the mix. The director is also thinking heavily about revisiting the story and elements in the 2017 movie.

Prometheus & Covenant Did For Alien What The Prequel Trilogy Did For Star Wars - Now History Is Repeating Itself

The Alien prequels, Prometheus and Covenant, have been met with the exact same response as the Star Wars prequel trilogy (for better and for worse).

In comparison to making a sequel to the more successful Alien: Romulus, Scott's comment also reveals that he's more interested in exploring the aftermath of Alien: Covenant. Storywise, the 2017 film leaves more space for a new story to take place. While Scott seems clear on which direction to take between a sequel for Covenant and Romulus, it also doesn't mean that the director isn't exploring other ideas.

Our Take on The Next Alien Movie

Timing Is Right, But There Are Risks

 Romulus (2024)

At the end of Alien: Covenant, David and Daniel head toward Origae-6 in the Covenant with thousands of frozen colonists and embryos on board. They are heading toward the unknown, and anything could happen. The Alien fandom has been waiting for a sequel ever since 2017. It seems that it might finally happen.

With Alien: Romulus' box office success and Covenant's cliffhanger ending, this unique combination might also offer the best timing for a Covenant sequel. On the other hand, there are certain risks involved in trying to reopen a relatively unsuccessful installment, which adds some uncertainty to what the next Alien movie could be, but with Romulus paying homage to Covenant and Prometheus, even the next movie didn't end up being a direct sequel, there's a high chance for it to incorporate elements from both films into its storytelling.
