Miley Cyrus Questions the Grammys For Excluding Her for 20 Years

There is a first time for everything.

While it may be hard to imagine Taylor Swift or Beyoncé as fresh faces in music, every single one of the industry’s biggest names had their first time attending the Grammys at some point or another. And some of those new faces at the 67th ceremony Feb. 2 could one day be just as legendary.

Back before Beyoncé was a record-holder for the most wins—currently 29—at music’s most prestigious award show, the “Texas Hold ‘Em” singer attended her first ceremony in 2001 with her girls, quite literally. She accepted her first-ever Grammys alongside fellow Destiny’s Child members Michelle Williams and lifelong friend Kelly Rowland

That night, the girl group—who sported coordinating Y2K looks on the red carpet and amid the ceremony—naturally took home Record of the Year as well as Best R&B Performance for their still-a-smash single “Say My Name.”

Seven years later, Taylor attended her first Grammys where she was nominated for Best New Artist. (Amy Winehouse ended taking home the prize.) The then-18-year-old wore a custom purple gown by Sandi Spika— wife to her old record label’s owner Scott Borchetta.

“I’m not going to prom this year,” Taylor said during a red carpet interview with CBS. “I decided to go to the Grammys instead. Not a bad trade off.”

At this year’s ceremony—set to be hosted by Trevor Noah at Crypto.com Arena—those up for the coveted Best New Artist gramophone include Doechii, Chappell Roan, Shaboozey, Benson Boone, Teddy Swims, Raye, Khruangbin and Sabrina Carpenter

Although it will be some of the nominees’ first time attending the Grammys—Doechii and Teddy have attended already—they have been in the industry for much longer and have finally earned their spots on the Grammys roster.

“I’ve really loved getting to know the mindset of a slow rise,” Sabrina, who dropped her debut album in 2015, said at the Variety's Hitmakers event in 2023. “Knowing that I have a lot to look forward to and no matter how much I experience and how much I have under my belt, I’ll always have something to learn. That’s kind of where I’m at right now, I’m just learning and I’m very grateful.”

Sabrina will soon get to learn the ins-and-outs of the Grammys at her very first ceremony. Keep reading to see inside more stars’ Grammys debuts…

During the 2001 ceremony, the Grammys kept saying Destiny's Child name as they nabbed Record of the Year and Best R&B Performance. The girl group donned matching outfits at what was Beyoncé's—as well as fellow members Kelly Roland and Michelle Williams'—first time attending.

It's definitely not the same as it was. Although the former One Direction singer didn't win Album of the Year until 2022, he took home Best Pop Solo Performance for "Watermelon Sugar" during his first ceremony in 2021.
