Resident Evil and Silent Hill are two of the most popular horror video game franchises out there. Owing to this, it is not surprising that, every few years, both get intriguing franchise extensions and have also been adapted for the screen on more than one occasion. So far, though, the on-screen takes on both have been mediocre at best, even though their games offer immense room for compelling horror storytelling.
Even the most recent on-screen take on Silent Hill, Return to Silent Hill, was heavily criticized for its campy visuals and lack of tension. Silent Hill 2 is known for having one of the best storylines in the history of horror games. Yet, despite picking its story for adaptation, the movie struggled to do it justice. Like the Silent Hill movies, even the Resident Evil live-action adaptations have struggled to leave their mark.
Zach Cregger's upcoming take on Resident Evil seems to have immense potential, but only time will tell whether it will be any better than previous adaptations. While viewers wait for a worthy Silent Hill or Resident Evil adaptation to come out, they must watch From on MGM+. The highly-acclaimed horror show adopts an original storyline, but it has traces of both Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
From Combines Resident Evil’s Survival Horror With Silent Hill’s Psychological Terror
Created by John Griffin, MGM+'s From seems to have the same visceral survival mechanics as Resident Evil with the dream-logic, purgatorial dread of Silent Hill. The show unfolds in a small nightmare town that loops back on itself. Once someone enters it, it becomes nearly impossible for them to escape.
The primary threat in From comes from nocturnal, flesh-eating ghoul "creatures" that have eerie smiling faces. They seem reminiscent of Silent Hill's grotesque monsters, particularly in the way they weaponize familiar human appearances to instill dread and fear.
Like both Resident Evil and Silent Hill, From also makes a character out of its creepy setting by constantly showing reality shifts and hallucinated manifestations.
Instead of treading the same path as most mystery box shows, From even ensures its terrors follow a fixed set of video game-esque rules. Protective talismans act like Resident Evil's save-rooms in the series, while its central town almost seems to feed on the trauma, guilt, and grief of its citizens.
From's protagonist, Boyd Stevens (Harold Perrineau), almost seems reminiscent of James Sunderland from Silent Hill 2. He is a grieving widower who holds himself responsible for the suffering of the people around him. As the show progresses, it also becomes evident that no one arrives in the town by accident and has an ongoing internal conflict. A similar theme can be seen in nearly all Silent Hill's characters.
The main characters in From are also constantly solving puzzles and discovering mysterious items and "doorways" to escape the town. These puzzle-solving elements seem reminiscent of the game-plays from Resident Evil and Silent Hill.
From Is Great, But Both Resident Evil & Silent Hill Need Better Direct Live-Action Adaptations

After four seasons, the show has done an incredible job of etching its identity in the horror genre. Unlike many modern shows on streaming, From will also tell a complete story by reaching its natural conclusion with season 5.
MGM+'s From can be seen as the perfect example of how much potential Resident Evil and Silent Hill hold as on-screen live-action adaptations. Both game franchises have decades worth of lore and storytelling that can be translated to the big or small screens. Owing to this, it is quite disappointing that they have not received worthy live-action adaptations even to this day.
Considering the 2026 Silent Hill movie's critical and commercial reception, it will likely be a while before the game franchise is considered for another live-action adaptation. Resident Evil, however, could finally start its on-screen redemption with Zach Cregger's upcoming movie. Till then, fans of both game franchises can fill the void by watching MGM+'s From.
